I believe that all young men and women in this nation, should have to give at least two years to either the military or a civilian organization spending time in a foreign nation. It should be a prerequisite to entering college. Duck the flack is coming. Smile.
My reason, is the person would have seen some of the world and could better make a determination of what he/she wants out of life.
I enlisted in the AF at 16, during the time of the draft. I figured I owed the time for the freedoms I enjoy.

We have had the draft before. I think the draft make young people think of their future. Under the old draft rules you had to either enter college 2 yr or 4 yr or you were subject to the draft.
So when you finished high school, you would have by then, made up your mind as to which you were going to do.
If you selected the military draft you were in the military for 6 years normally 2 years of active duty and 4 years in a reserve unit or national guard unit.
At any rate what ever choice you made got you off the streets and into something constructive.
Those that wanted to avoid the draft and enter the Army because the Army got most of the draftees enlisted in the service of their choice, Army, Navy, Marine Corp or Coast Guard.
When the individual got out of the military service most of them would now attend college to get a degree because of the GI bill or they wanted additional education in the career field they had selected.
Now the teenagers getting out of high school just hang on corners, joining gangs and generally getting in trouble and complaining about getting a low paying job because they have no job skills.
I hope that this has been of some use to you, good luck.

I will not get the best answer, but I had to respond to some of the liars and idiots responding to this question.
The first responder, idiot 1, cannot join the Navy Seals until they are actually in the Navy and then meet the strict criteria to be selected to be in the Navy Seals, and then pass the course in which there used to be a 50% failure rate.
The third responder, idiot #2, the draft is done according to social security number, blacks are not given a different ssn to identify them as black. The last time the draft was in place, the blacks were the last ones to go because the government didn't want to be accused of racism as this responder is doing anyway.
Responder #4 actually has some validity to their comment, and I commend them on at least thinking about the subject in question.
Responder #5 is idiot #3 and liar #1. It is not a bad idea to have mandatory military, but to have mandatory military or civilian in a foreign country is just stupid. You cannot understand what goes on in the military without serving in the military. Just being overseas does not help anyone decide what to do with their life, experience in their own culture does.
In addition, the lying part comes in when this responder says they emlisted at sixteen. It is illegal to enlist before you are seventeen and then only with parental consent, so the responder either lied to us or his/her recruiter when joining.
In case you can't tell, I am sick of people trying to collect points for just answering questions that the have no real answer for.
In my case, I joined the military on a volunteer basis, so I cannot answer your question unbiased. I would go back in again if absolutely needed, but I am beyond the years of being drafted and I served my time and then some already. I think the draft is a bad idea, but it may become necessary with our military being stretched thin all over the world.

I had to respond to BunC...have you actually ever been to a military base? Have you looked at the fact that there are a HUGE number of whites? Do you think that when they call a unit up to go to Iraq they only send the black ones? Your argument is so ridiculous! Oh and by the way maybe you ought to check out the pictures of the KIA's and see how many white men and women there are. There are more whites than blacks so stop trying to act like the white man is trying to keep the black man down by sending him to war!
Sorry but I had to address that before I could answer the question that was posted....No there shouldn't be a draft. It would compromise the integrity of the military as a whole if you bring in people who don't want to be there. My dad was in the army during Vietnam. He had volunteered but of course was there with people who were drafted. He said that being around the draftees made him nervous because some took the attitude that since they hadn't joined freely that they just would do as they pleased. Of course not all did that or we'd have had way more casualties but it was enough of them to concern him. I think we should try and keep it an all volunteer military. As far as if I would go if I was needed but had a choice not to go....no I wouldn't because my husband is already in and we have small kids to take care of. If we didn't have kids my answer would probably be different though.

I would join the Navy SEALs before I could get drafted if I knew a draft was coming. Draftees do not have a very good chance of living.
I think they are considering re-instating the draft.
Quality of the actual people in the armed forces does not matter; they get training before they go in and they get equipped with some good stuff

Draft will only degrade the quality of the armed forces by filling them with nasty civilians that don't want to be there.
