I think the best dogs are mutts. They are less overbred and not as high strung. They are usually great with families, and way cheaper because they are not showable.

I'd say first off, mutts or rescue dogs tend to be the best dogs. They may be a bit more work first off, but their loyalty and thankfulness for saving them is unparalleled.
Also, along those lines I believe that greyhounds are perhaps one of the most amazing dogs. Adopting a greyhound from a racetrack is a great choice. They might be a bit flightly at first, and it'll take a while (same as adopting a thoroughbred horse) but they're very quiet and sweet. They'll cuddle and lounge around outside but also love to play fetch and run around outside as well so they make a great combo.
Plus they're gorgeous.

As many kinds of people there are, as many 'best' dogs there are, one has to find the one most suited to you, your needs, and your environment. Do research about possible breeds you like, to find out all about them (like a Cocker Spaniel is a jelous kinda dog, Huskies are best when you get more than one of them, etc, some dogs dislike smaller animals as a breed). Find out what theuir general health is like and what they are prone to (German Shepherds being prone to HD, etc).
Be honest about yourself, how much time you have to give this animal, and your environment (ie if you live on a small property and are unlikely to go for long walks with the animal).
You'll find the perfect dog. It's a lifelong commitment, so take your time and do your research well.

The best dog is the the one that will fit into your life style and also melts your heart.
I prefer Norman Basset Hounds. They have shorter ears and not quite as pointed nose as a regular Basset. Great personality, loving and loyal. I did find that ours didn't like to walk as much as I wanted him too; so I learned to only walk him as far as I could carry him back. At 50 pounds they became very short walks.
Ours loved to sing and I would swear that if he could have put his tongue in the right position he would have been having conversations with us.

Oh, that's a tough one. I see all kinds of breeds and I think I love them all. I don't even like going by breeds though because I've learned that every individual dog has it's own temperament and character.

One from a shelter, that doesn't have a home ;]
Or breed?
I would say Basset Hound because they are just awesome dogs! They love to play, they are good cuddle buddies and are so cute! I have one named Cloe, and she is such a ham. She loves to show off and sleep until someone drags her off her little juicy couture bed that she loves. haha. have a nice day =]
