Dental hygenists are sort of like nurses, in that they have lots of training and can do things with the patient (like clean their teeth) but the dentist is the one who oversees all of the work that the hygenists do. The dentists are also the ones who do the more advanced procedures like filling cavities and pulling teeth.

you should see a hygienist every 6 weeks they check your teeth clean them advise on which toothbrushes to use and what toothpaste and how to brush you teeth properly they do have a lot of training but not as much as dentist do, dentists do all the technical work like crowns and veneers, however if need be hygienists can do fillings

a dentist pulls your teeth and does crowns and filling all the stuff that isn't that gross,the hygienist does all the gross stuff before the doctor looks at your teeth like cleans them and gets all the gross stuff off

Dentist are graduates of a "dental medical school" they have a PhD in dental medicine. Md's are graduates of a "medical" school" and are Phd's in medicine.They both take state and national "board" exams that issues them a license to practice. They specialize the same as MD's, some MD's are maxillofacial surgeons, that's a DMD degree After there specialty training they are tested again to pass and enter their specialty organizations,then they are "Board Certified. Dental Hygiene st are like nurses that specialize in dental medicine. Dentist have more schooling,hygienist can specialize also,and requires more schooling. Take care. SW FNP

A dentist. There is no comparison.

And on top of that, many dentists go on to do some sort of residency program in general dentistry or a specialty after they graduate.
