because people don't pay attention when they drive! if we (well not me since i can't even drive yet) weren't so busy talking on our phones or fixing our make-up maybe there would be less animal harming accidents! And although there are laws against using cell phones while driving, 91% of people will most likely still talk on their cell phones! So, I leave you with the question of, is it so hard to get off your stinking phone for a minute to prevent the death of a harmless, innocent animal?! =)

Depends on where you are and how well lit the road is. At night, especially in the country, if headlights don't hit a cat's eyes, it's really hard to know they're there. I've not hit one, and pray I never will, but sometimes they decide to make a break for it across the road.

I keep my cat inside, or only outside under my supervision - partly because of that reason. I live on a really busy street, and I honestly don't think a lot of people care if they hit them.

Keep your cat INSIDE. To help you out get one of those shock collars meant for small dogs. They aren't cheap but a "zone" type can be had for less than $100 at the pet store or online. They will work for most cats but you have to maintain just like with dogs. Constant correction and remove the collar every 12 hours or so. The only problem is cats are not as smart or trainable as dogs so they QUICKLY revert back when the collar is off. I'm working on that problem still myself.

I think the people that run over cats are sick and disturbed and it is probably done on purpose. I've seen people swerve towards cats. I've lost a cat the same way before and I don't understand how anyone can have so much hate in them. I think if it was an accident the person would stop and look for the owner or try to save the animal by rushing it to the vet. So in short they are probably assheads who have no control in their pathetic lives so they take it out on those who cannot defend themselves.

Why are people so blind to the fact that cats are safe from cars inside the house?

It's not a matter of they're blind, it's a matter of people are allowing their cats out and not teaching them to avoid cars, which means that they're not going to know to get out of the way. Besides, cats are low to the ground, move quickly, and generally are not seen until it's too late.

Sorry 'bout your cat, but it's your fault. If it wasn't outside, it would still be alive.

Well, I read some of the answers and agree with one person, who said, that most of the people don't really pay attention the road. And I think if your cat have been always inside of your house, you should not let him go outside, then he or she wouldn't die, that's what I do, and all of my cats are alive. I have one cat, who was always were inside, but one day we let him go out, and when he came back he was really sick, because he wasn't used to the outside world. He couldn't stand on his legs, he tried to but always fell down, then when we took him to the vet, he said that he was really sick, and he could have died, but he is alive... Enought about that, as I said not so many people pay attention to the road when they drive, so if your cat is used living inside, you shouldn't let him go out.

Ok. Well don't let your cats outside! Obviously if one got hit from wandering into the road if you let your others out it is likely to happen again. That and they kill other animals and bring home fleas and ear mites and ticks that YOU can get. Keep your cats inside. Its that simple.

They're probably asking a similar question......why are cat owners so blind, to allow their pet outdoors, when they see so many dead on the side of the roads?

YOU are to blame for your cat being run over. People wouldn't run over them if they werent allowed to roam around freely. Most cities and towns it is not only illegal to let your dog run loose but also your cat.
I, for one, will run over a cat before I swerve, hit the ditch and flip my car, possibly killing myself and whoever is with me. Maybe you should think about that before letting your cat run loose.
