My ex-boyfriend broke up w/ me after being together for 1.5 years. He said that he could not do a long distance relationship thing. Ideally, I would want to get back together w/ him, but I know that this is not a possibility. He calls 3x/week and wants to know what I'm doing. Should I tell him that I've started to causually date people?

I dont really think its any of his business. Your in a different state and I think that you two are going to probably lose touch with eachother soon anyway. Theres really no reason to tell him if the outcome is only pain on his part. You both know your not dating so your not leading him on and you enjoy talking to him on the phone.
I wouldnt say anything unless he asks you then you can be honest with him. He just might be talking to other people too even though he still likes you.

If he broke up with you, it is ok to date other people. I also was in a long distance relationship and it ended when he decided to explore his options (meaning dating others). Well I remember telling him "ok but you will never find anyone better than me or get over me". We kept in contact for about 1 1/2 months before I started dating again. He knew of his cousins best friend wanting to go out with me and he encouraged me to do it. So I started dating my now ex-husband. When my ex/b/f came back to our town he wanted to see me so we got together with one of his college friends who came up with him on spring break. It was a little akward for him but not for me since I had already decided I wanted to remains friends with him even though I had a new b/f. Later that night he slipped a note on my cars windshield saying he was a fool for ever breaking up with me. I had to let him down and remind him we broke up because he wanted to. Well anyway, that continued that way up til the time I got married to my first husband which was the biggest mistake of my life. Since I can't do anything about that now I made it a point to let anyone I dated know about my best friend (the 1 who broke up w/me) that he was going to be in my life and if they didn't like it they knew where the door was cause I wasn't about to be controlled. As for telling your ex/b/f you're dating again I guess it depends on how much you want to be friends because not every guy will be heartbroken and he broke up with you because he didn't want to try the long distance relationship and you have every right to date others and if he doesn't like it he gave you your freedom and he will have to live with it.

If he's asking, then answer. Sometimes people need to hear these things in order to move on, it gives them a sense of closure. He sounds like he still cares about you to some extent, so at the very least you could still maintain the friendship.

If he is your ex then it should not matter to him if you are dating people or not. If he is calling you that much and you two are not together you should ask him why he wants to know so much if you two are only friends.

What would be your motivation for telling him?

To make him jealous?
To get rid of him?

Think about it. You may possibly make him jealous, but he may just tell you about women he's been dating too. And the jealousy thing won't make him suddenly want to be with you again.

I think you should stop talking to him altogether and move on.

Yea, I would not get to serious. This may be what he needs to want you back.. When my hubby and I split up(cuz of him) I dated a guy and it made him past the stage of jelous... He then started trying again and now we are back together.

He broke up with you, what should it matter to him if you are dating other people? Does he expect you to stay single the rest of your life? I'd hope not.
