The short answer is: it's just luck.

Now for the long answer.

Slot machines are regulated by state gambling commisions. The casinos are required to pay out a certain percentage of what they take in. The more money people feed into the slots, the more money the casinos make.

Casinos have been known to tune their slot machines so they pay out less during the "peak" times (weekends, evenings, etc.). However, the machines still pay out at least the minimum winning percentage that's specified by the state. So, it may be possible to lose more slowly during off-peak hours, but it's not guaranteed.

Also, the slot machines that advertise huge jackpot payoffs usually will only give you a chance to actually hit the huge jackpot if you bet the full amount every time you pull the handle. If you put one coin in, instead of four, and pull the handle, you won't be eligible for the jackpot payout.

Many people sit around and watch others play the slots, then when someone leaves (after having lost money) they will go to that machine and play it, thinking it is "due" to hit since the last player didn't make any money. This is a fallacy. The results are completely random and are recalculated every time you pull the handle. Machines don't run hot or cold. There are no patterns that you can discern simply by being observant. It is just a matter of luck.

There are ways to better your chance but at the end of the day it's still all down to luck.

Best way is to watch out for anyone who puts in a lot of money without winning much back then steal their machine.

Each pull of the lever has a negative expectation. Not only are there no techniques to win, you will in fact lose in the long term.

There are no techniques to winning. If you get lucky, take the money and run to the nearest exit.. Gambling should be viewed as entertainment and we all pay for our entertainment.
