What should we do when someone is standing right in your way where you want to be, when shopping? Then they turn to you and say, "Am I in your way?'' What is the proper way to respond? If I say "No" I'm a liar. If I say "Yes" then I appear pushy. What's the proper way to deal with this?

I'm referring to a clothing store or card shop where people are pondering their purchase. Not somewhere where a simple"Excuse Me" will do.

I usually politely say, "That's OK, I can wait." Or I finish my shopping elsewhere in the store and return later. I don't like it when I'm looking at something and someone else pushes their way in, so I don't do that to other people.

Be kind, Treat them the way you would like to be treated or even better.

How many times you may have thoughtlessly inconvenienced people and they just found another way to get on with their day, without hurting your feelings, or even letting you know about your preoccupation with your own needs likes or desires.

Say, excuse me. or, I can go around, or I am sorry for interupting you. Remember To Thank Them. Use a gentle voice and smile kindly.

You never know what is going on in someone's life and perhaps they are out shopping as their only break from being a caretaker or planning a funeral for a loved one.

Whatever you do say, be a blessing to the people you share this world with.

God Bless You, ;-)

You smile politely and say something like "Oh, that's okay," or how about "No problem. I can wait." This is just polite and I am sure this is how you would like others to treat you when the situation is reversed. Also, when one says "No, not at all" to someone who is obviously is in the way, it just means that you don't mind waiting a few seconds.

How About Hell Yes..

I think the proper answer, would be, "Yes, If I could squeeze through here, that would be great."

Remember if they are asking the question, then they probably care unlike the 27 million other (fill in the blank) out there

If they're truly in your way, then say, I just wanted/needed to get/look at _________ (whatever they're standing in front of.)

Don't answer yes or no--they know they're probably in your way, so you don't need to labor the point.

But if you don't say anything, or if you say, noooo, of course not! then they don't move.

So they ARE in your way.

And you just missed an opportunity to get the person to move.

Take the chance, keep your elbow ready, and get in there.

It's a store! You wouldn't be in there just to...be there. Obviously, you want to shop or buy something.

So be assertive and take the opportunity that presents itself.

I usually smile and very politely say, "It's quite alright. I can wait."

This lets them know that yes, they are in your way and you do indeed want to be right where they are, but that you are patient as well.

If they are in your way, nothing is wrong with saying yes. But look casual.

How about, "Oh, thank you for asking! Yes, I would like to get through. (or I would like to look at this), etc."

Good luck!

I don't know; I usually wait for them to leave the spot themselves...
