Iv'e applied to do a nursing course at university and have got an offer to go to the university that i wanted, but the only problem is my parents don't want me to go! This is because the university is in a big city which i suppose has its muggings/knive crime etc. and i would have to be travelling around the city early in the morning and late at night to get to placements at hospitals. I can see where they're coming from as i don't really want to be standing in an isolated train station at 5 in the morning but i don't want to lose the opportunity of going to this uni. My parents would sooner me go to a smaller uni which i've also got a place for but it's not exactly the course i want and i like the idea of going to a big city. They say they're just worried about me and i understand that but how can i convince them that i really want to go?

Chances are that when you have to be travelling to get to placements at hospitals that others that are doing the course with you will also be travelling. Stay in a group. Reassure your parents that you will take all safety percausions and not put yourself in risky situations.

Think about it ...millions of people live in the city and nothing happens to them. As long as you are aware of what is going on around you you should be fine. Also you could take a self defence course before you go if it would make your parents feel better.

Stick to your guns and do the course you want to...at some point your parents have to let you go out on your own a bit.

Good luck

By the way...parents will worry about you anyway no matter where you go...I've been out on my own for years...am married and have children of my own ...and my mother still worries if I don't answer the phone when she calls.

Sit down with them and come up with plans together of how you can go to the uni you want AND be safe.

Discuss how exactly you would get to your placements early or go home late. If you can all come to a compromise then you'll all get what you want.

Best wishes

i know this isnt what you want to hear but id listen to your parents. would u rather be a nurse or be nursed? cause if u get hurt or die you might need a nurse instead of becoming one.
id listen to your parents.

you seem young.if u want to experience city life..you'll have lots of opportunities when you finish.
nursing takes a lot of your time anyway. you'll have little time to hang out and enjoy the city.
better go to a small town where u can focus on ur studies. if you get bored...go to the city during weekends to hang out or during spring break.

Hey Bexy,
First off, what city are we talking about? I live in and attend a university here in Detroit (one of the highest crime rates in America), and feel perfectly safe 99% of the time. Large cities, at least here in the states, are nothing to worry about! I'm afraid I can't offer much help if you are elsewhere. I've lived in London and Dublin and found both to be safe and enjoyable!

Good luck at school!

Go anyway. I'm sure you will meet awesome people there, and one thing that is good about friends, is that they help you out. Eg, dropping you off home, or waiting with you at the station etc.
You will be ok! Go for your dream! My friends parents did something similar and she became depressed and really she looks back wishing she didn't do it.

Stick to your guns, and explain to them how much it really means to you. Get information about the safety of the campus, their security units, and so forth to give to them. If this is something you really want, don't let it go! You'll regret it later.

You know...
I gotta side with your parents.

If it's not safe - then it's not safe.

You don't know this yet - but bad things CAN happen to you.

Nursing is a great career - best wishes to you!

you won't convince them, my daughter is going to college in fall of next year, and we just went through this exact same discussion/argument; I won; why? 1) I'm paying 2) I'm older and wiser 3) I'm her mother....

truth:
i didnt read the whole thing, BUT...
this is your future.
not ur parents.
its ur choice
whether its the right one or not.
if you go to a univerity you wont like
chances are you wont succeed in that univerity.
talk to your parents,
let them know that its your decision,
and YOUR FUTURE,
NOT THEIRS.
your parents need to ralize that
your old enough to make your own decisions.
good luck.
