Hi I live in Australia and the word root means intercourse, and the chips are the same as in England but we do seem to be a little Americanised now calling them french fries.
What you call crisps are also called chips here as well.

A root is a shag....
A friend of mine's mother went to live in Aus, she got a job in a rather posh department store. A lady was enquiring about a dress, and my friends mother said she'd go and have a root in the back. The whole shop fell around laughing. To root in Ireland is to look for something, so be careful what you say ...

'To chip' as a verb in Australian usage means to poke fun at or find fault with someone. I don't know whether Australians use 'chip' to mean 'french fries' or 'chip' to mean 'crisps'.
'To root' is Australian slang for 'to have sex'.

"root" means "to have sex". When talking about sports, just ask an Aussie "Who do you root for?" and watch their reaction:-)
