Show an interest in them. Ask them questions about themselves (such as what they like to do for fun, if they work, etc)...people love to talk about theirself. If you know they have a particular interest..bring something up about it. Just make that connection.

MakeThingsRight has a great starting answer, but...

Keep in mind the culture of the person you are aproaching.
There are sub-cultures within America where the people have their own communication tradition. Everyone has a comfort zone. Most is developed by family groups within a culture. Body language, eye contact, tone of voice, projection of voice, phraseology, touch (or non-touch), gender-based communication can also be an area where you have to be careful. In some cultures, men and women do not converse, or can not be singly in a room by themselves.

If these are people you do not normally talk to, then best find out what type of persons they are so that you can have effective communication with them without coming across as rude, disrespectful or ignorant of their culture.

I suggest you take a step at a time. Learn to relax and approach others with pleasantries. Kick-start the conversation from there. Never speak on religion becos it can be sensitive. Speak on some general topics.
