When we dream, and this includes most mammals, I suspect, there is a chemical secreted that basically keeps us from getting up during the night and acting out what we are doing in our dreams. In dogs and cats, they will sometimes make running motions, or twitching whiskers. If you observe your cats during this time you may even notice their eyes moving quickly under their eye lids. I know my cats do and my dogs did. They are dreaming heavily and can be quite entertaining. Don't wake them. They need to dream, just as we do.
hope this helps.

Kitty-cat nightmares. Just touch them gently and softly without waking them. It makes them relax and feel better. The shaking stops immediately, until the next nightmare, which may not happen for another hour or may happen 5 minutes later.

It is just them dreaming. I have taken my dog to the vet because of she will bark and talk and shake and move her legs in her sleep, but it is perfectly normal.

My guess is they are dreaming. No telling what about, but it must be a good dream. Otherwise they would wake up.
