I've been described as a prescriptive learner?

Although, I'm not English; my love of correct grammar and punctuation is worrying for some. I try to learn the proper way and often been told I'm old fashioned in some ways. I try to stick to rules but some people say language is evolving at a rapid speed and I need to relax a bit by not sticking to old ways.
