The world's largest passenger airplane will touch down at O'Hare International Airport next month during its first appearance in the U.S., aviation officials said Thursday.
The Airbus A380, a double-deck airliner that can be outfitted with more than 850 seats, is tentatively set to land at O'Hare on March 20, a day after its arrival at Kennedy International Airport in New York on a test flight from Frankfurt, Germany, officials said.
The mammoth plane, operated by the German airline Lufthansa, also will be flown from Frankfurt to Dulles International Airport near Washington next month as part of meeting technical route-proving requirements from Europe, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Regular A380 service to the U.S. will not begin until 2009 or later, giving O'Hare officials time to make a number of airport improvements to accommodate the aircraft.
O'Hare's 13,000-foot runway 14 Right/32 Left is long enough to handle the A380, and it is the only runway at the airport that is 200 feet wide. The others are 150 feet wide.
Before regular service by the A380 is introduced, however, bridges that extend over Interstate Highway 190 must be reinforced, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation. Some taxiways already have been modified to make room for the wider turning radius of the A380, officials said.
The Lufthansa A380 to be used in the demonstration flights to the U.S. will have more than 500 seats, including 12 seats in the first-class cabin, 64 seats in the business section and 443 seats in economy class, Lufthansa spokeswoman Jennifer Urbaniak said. As many as 24 flight attendants will be on board.
The non-revenue passengers flying to New York will include Airbus test crews, Lufthansa employees, members of the media and business partners, Urbaniak said. The plane will be mostly empty on the leg to O'Hare, she added.
The upper deck extends along the entire length of the A380 fuselage, creating about 50 percent more floor space than the Boeing 747-400, which is the largest airliner currently in commercial operation.
No U.S. airlines have yet signed on to purchase A380s, according to Airbus S.A.S., the European aerospace consortium that manufactures the plane. The model has been hobbled by production problems that have delayed its rollout.
Still, the aircraft, including a freighter model with huge payload capacity, is expected to start making regular appearances at O'Hare as soon as 2010, officials said.
Last fall, the city completed a project to upgrade some taxiways to handle larger aircraft, including the Airbus A340-600, the world's longest passenger jet currently in service.
Bridge strengthening at O'Hare is expected to be completed in 2008, O'Hare spokeswoman Wendy Abrams said.
"We also need to complete some gate work at the international terminal," Abrams said. "Our plan is to combine Gates M13 and M14 to accommodate the arrival of the A380."
The aircraft will depart from O'Hare from the United Airlines terminal, she said.
Under the city's O'Hare expansion plan, the airport would be equipped to handle the A380 regularly when new runway 10 Center comes on line, but the inauguration date of the runway is being held up by a court fight over the city's plan to make room for the runway by relocating about 1,600 graves at St. Johannes Cemetery.

It will use one of the two current landing runways, whatever they are at that time. Just stand between them and watch for a slightly wider bird than normal.
There's a lot of BS about the A380 coming out of Seattle, it needs exactly the same runway length as the 747-400, that was one of the design criteria.
Yes thye'll be able to unload OK, the main deck is at a very similar height to that of the 747.
They aren't having to dig up a graveyard so the A380 can land, it doesn't need anything that isn't there already, other than a way to shift 800 people on and off the plane in a reasonable time.
