Journal of Discourses 1:50-51

"Now hear it, O inhabitants of the earth, Jew and Gentile, Saint and sinner! When our father Adam came into the garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is MICHAEL, the Archangel, the ANCIENT OF DAYS! about whom holy men have written and spoken--HE is our FATHER and our GOD, and the only God with whom WE have to do. "

I thought your doctrine doesn't change.

Mormon prophets are supposed to be correct and inspired by God. Young was a prophet. Was we wrong?

Actually the doctrine does change when God send revelations to later Prophets.

Like when Brigham Young's wife got tired of cleaning chewing tobacco from the spittoons in the temple, and Brigham received a 'revelation' that tobacco was no longer allowed in the church.

Consistent updates through divine revelation make a convenient out for doctrine inconsistent with Science. Kinda like the moon being populated with humans.

The doctrine doesn't change. Practices are updated through revelation. Adam was not God.

Why do you like taking things out of context? You did that on another question where you quoted the Book of Mormon.

Your hatred of a religion is showing. What did we ever do to you to deserve the fact that you spout mis-information and downright LIES!

EDIT: Hey "sansfear" the Word of Wisdom was revealed LONG before the dangers of tobacco came out. It wasn't a convenient change.

Hey, "closetcoon_fan" - it was JOESPH SMITH. and you are very disrespectful of a legitimate religion.

WE ARE NOT A CULT!!!!

If Brigham Young did infact say that Adam was God, you must have misunderstood. See, in the LDS religion, we believe that if you live by God's commandments, you have the opportunity to become a God of your own world. So, he probably meant he was a God, but not our God.

>on the starting up, how do you justify the coverage of "keep on with the Prophet, >he's regularly occurring with of how" no individual is arguing that he replace proper right into a prophet. The historic Christian church alleges that he replace proper right into a pretend prophet. it really is how this receives reconciled. Deuteronomy chapters 13 and 18 has some teachings about pretend prophets it really is pertinent right here. >B) Secondly, how are you waiting to suspect Wilford Woodruff's >statement that God gained't enable a prophet lead you off purpose? a real prophet gained't attempt this by way of very actuality this one listens to God and passes alongside God's messages. >by way of very actuality the Adam-God doctrine replace into given at an strong >Church function, does no longer that be Brigham "magnificent people >off purpose?" It valuable ought to! >C) Thirdly, if an LDS prophet "converses with God" and has >gained a "particular witness of Christ" in the course of the 2d more advantageous acceptable than likely he ought to have. Mormons say that their prophets are truly "incorrect" and pass away on my own the concept of pretend prophet because won't be able to practice to them in God's genuine church.

Adam was not God, God created Adam and Eve as the first humans. They had children and then God made more humans all over the world, that is why we have the different countries and different races!

Adam is not God and never was, but I have to thank you. When people like you post things like this, people start to ask questions. Then the baptism rate goes up. Thank you!

Oh, no...another anti-Mormon.

Can't you just disappear, already? We are led by inspired men of God, who's divine guidance supersedes ALL previous inspired men of God.

If current teachings are vastly different, or even opposite of a previous leader's, it simply reveals that God has changed His mind, or that He has a desire to see how far our faith can be stretched. Hobbies are not limited to this life.

I have read nearly all of the anti-Mormon literature due to my being an Institute Instructor, and can say that yes, most of it shakes my faith, significantly. But the fact remains, that no other church offers me eternal marriage, water instead of wine, and probing that makes the Department of Homeland Security jealous.

We Mormons know that Joseph Smith was not perfect. We know no one is, save Jesus. But Joseph was persecuted and died for merely smashing a printing press, threatening fewer than 16 local governments, destroying land values, ripping up families, causing thousands to leave their families, trekking over barren and dangerous praries only 12 years before the railroad was available, thus killing 1,386 men, women and children who sought the Promised Land.

A BRIGHT TESTIMONY

Look at the Temples now built. These are spectacular edifices that have diverted funds that otherwise would have been used for mere necessities of life that fade.

The external lighting of them averages $16,935 per 24-hour period, and this is a fantastically low cost for the respectable social image of the Church.

So please, leave us to our fantasies. Let us waste our lives. We want authoritarianism to fill the earth. Legalistic religious observance will be shown as the key that will save America.

The Elders of Israel are now preparing to rush forth to save the Constitution from its impending doom.

Your jealousy about our rotting wheat, dead batteries and robotic meetings is clear.

We are happy in Zion: Our families are loving. There are very few unwanted pregnancies. Divorce is almost unheard of. We do not take medications. Our bodies are fit and healthy. We're humble. We are not lustful. We do not judge. Pornography doesn't excite us. We never gamble. And lastly, we will inherit Heaven. Not a bad return for only 10% of our earnings, wearing 19th century underwear and allowing our lives to be lived by proxy here.

PS - "Adam" was God's nickname. Truth can withstand any scrutiny.

Enemies of the Church of Jesus Christ criticize and spread a great deal of miss-information about a rather obscure teaching by Brigham Young. The Adam-God Theory, as it is known, was never considered a foundational doctrine of the church then or now. I've never heard it spoken of in church. The first time I heard it, I was confronted by a rather antagonistic pastor of another faith while serving as a missionary. So what is it? Enemies of the Church of Jesus Christ have grossly mis-interpreted several quotes by Brigham Young about Adam to mean 1. Adam is God, 2. Adam is the Father of Jesus Christ.

President Brigham Young is quoted as having said: "Now hear it, 0 inhabitants of the earth, Jew and Gentile, saint and sinner! When our father Adam came into the Garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is Michael, the Archangel, the Ancient of Days, about whom holy men have written and spoken-He is our father and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do" (Journal of Discourses, vol. 1, p. 50).

First, President Brigham Young clearly declares that Adam is Michael, the Archangel, the Ancient of Days. Therefore, he cannot be saying that Adam is the God whom we worship. Members of the church of Jesus Christ worship our Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus Christ. We do not worship Adam and we do not pray to him. We are all Adam's children through the flesh, but Elohim, the God we worship, is the Father of our spirits; and Jesus Christ, his first Begotten Son in the spirit creation and his Only Begotten Son in the flesh, is our Eldest Brother.

So, why does Brigham Young say Adam is "the only God with whom we have to do"? Because we believe that men, through the grace of Christ, can become like God. Brigham Young is saying that Adam has obtained Eternal life and exaltation. Adam has returned to his place in God's heavenly council and has become like God. Because all men are the physical offspring of Adam, therefore, Adam is the only God with whom we [physically] have to do.

The next mis-represented quote involves a teaching that Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. Brigham Young is quoted, "When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness. He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. And who is the Father?.... Jesus, our elder brother, was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the Garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven.... Now, remember from this time forth, and forever, that Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost" (Journal of Discourses. vol. 1, pp. 50-51).

The "same character that was in the Garden of Eden" is not referring to Adam. Brigham Young is clearly referring to Elohim. Elohim dwelt in the garden with Adam, walked with him, and taught him his language up until the Fall. Adam can be considered the father of Christ through Mary. But Brigham Young is clearly referring to Elohim in this case.

Because he is the father of man and womankind? I don't know, this could be interpretted many different ways, as can any other religion's Bible and/or Scripture.
