My kitchen is light blue with touches of burgandy flowers and green leaves in a 6" border. My curtains are white, with a closely matched-to-the-border edging. It makes the room very light and bright.

First pick out a favorite color of yours. Next find the color you have least in your kitchen but plan on keeping it. Take all the colors you have picked out with you to paint store.
Compare what you love with what you have and add a color on your wall that is complimentary to your palette.
I like walls to pop with color if there is less color everywhere else.
Red and yellows come to mind in a kitchen. Reds are hard to cover and sometimes take up to 5 coats. Yellows can be too bright depending on your lighting. Always, always take a sample to try on the wall before buying. It can look different on your wall than it does at the paint store.
Also whites can be beautiful with accessories making the color. Like roosters or apples as your color.
I despise wall paper as it gets old and boring. Paint you can change often when growing tired of it.

I suggest a soft but rich buttery yellow for the walls. Paint your trim white if you can and you can add rich blue( not navy..too dark) accent colour here and there. You can also accnet with greens nicely.I suggest a sage or olive green to accent.

You need to get a color chart and choose samples at different time of the day and night to see the different results.
