eggs used in the united states market for consumption come from hens segregated from roosters. therefore, their eggs never have the opportunity to become fertilized.
however, you said your wife and you don't want to harm animals. if you still want to continue with eating eggs, you should see about switching over to eggs from organic freerange chickens (although this designation is still under fire for not truly representing the meaning of "Free range") - hens used for conventional eggs have notoriously bad living conditions in the USA.

Eggs sold at the grocery store are 99.99% unfertilized, so this is not really a concern if you don't want to eat "potential life."
The Hens are kept separate from any source of fertilizaton (that is, away from the Roosters).
"Farm" eggs have a higher chance of being fertilized, because there are fewere "safeguards" against the Rooster getting into the henhouse.
Eggs which are even SUSPECTED of being fertilized are discarded (don't you feel better now?) because of the bad PR a company that allows even one fertilized egg into the production stream would cause.
This really should be a non-issue.
You should probably feel worse about the fact that the hens are kept in small cages, under horrible conditions, with their beaks burned off and their feet de-clawed to keep them from attacking their fellow cage-mates, than you should about the potential dangers of eating a fertilized egg.

My husband and I raised our own hens and we use the eggs the lay. Try buying from an individual. Our hens appear to be very happy and are given vegetable scraps daily along with cracked corn. We do not have a rooster so therefore our eggs are not fertilized. Most commercially bought eggs are not fertilized but the chickens are usually pumped full of crap and treated inhumanely. Buy from the little guy. You are safer that way.

No, an embryo is the result of a fertilized egg. Chicken eggs are unfertilized.
If you don't want to harm any potential life, I'd give up now. you kill bacteria everyday.

You are safe when it comes to eggs. Eggs we buy in the store come from chickens who just eat and lay eggs, that is their life. Most are never around a rooster, except when growing up to a laying age. Therefore it is unlikely that any eggs would be fertilized.

No. The eggs marketed for human consumption are unfertilized, so there's no embryonic cells present. In the Philippines, there is a "delicacy" called balut, which is a duck embryo still in its shell. The juice is consumed first, followed by the embryo, complete with some tiny bones and feathers. it was used as one of the challenges on the program "Fear Factor".

Yes. Chickens come from eggs. The eggs would hatch if they were not injected with a chemical that keeps them in the form we eat them in. If you don't want to harm animals you cant eat anything that comes out of an animal either. (except milk) I don't know why you would do that though.

Most commercially produced eggs are infertile. You can purchase fertile eggs from health food stores if you like.

Unless you purchase Balut which is a fertilized egg which has the chick growing inside...all others are infertile.
