Art is a form of media and can send powerful messages to those who study it. Art is not just a way to exhibit beauty but a tool to 'voice' an opinion, comment on society, reflect upon history, art has the ability to speak to a wide audience and get people thinking about the world in which they live, maybe even prompting them to take up a cause and 'move' on an issue

Art has temporary power over whoever admires, reads, or just looks at it. To make someone stop and look takes a degree of control. Depending on the person, art can impact or change a life. In that process, it makes us think and possibly react.

i interpret this as what you consider to be art has the power to make you want to do something about it. for example, the commercials about smoking. it is a form of art that has the power to impact individuals, families, any race, etc., it has the power to cause a change as far as people (making us move) quiting and spreading the message to quit because it is bad for you.
this is my interpretation but every quote is open to all ideas because it is your own view of what the message is suppose to be in the quote.

It is saying that art is not only a reflection of what is happening in the world, it can also change the existing world. It can make things happen. This view challenges the view that art is like a dormant snapshot of the world, which at best shows us what 'was happening' rather than an active force.

Some forms of art are so compelling that people do things they wouldn't normally do, maybe take action in a cause that was portrayed in the art, maybe redecorate a room in the house because we got an idea from the art, maybe dance to a good beat.

Art is a form of power. It can give you feelings and change your mind about your surrounding and your feeling about different things. It can make you change because of the cause it may stand for and how it applies to your everyday life.

I think Ossie Davis is not only referring to the inspirational nature of art, but also the power to stimulate our brain and engage our heart with a kind of universal language of surprise. Of course, he includes literature and drama in his use of the word "art".
Here's an example from Shakespeare:
<
Professor Philip Davis, from the University’s School of English, said: “The brain reacts to reading a phrase such as ‘he godded me’ from the tragedy of Coriolanus, in a similar way to putting a jigsaw puzzle together. If it is easy to see which pieces slot together you become bored of the game, but if the pieces don’t appear to fit, when we know they should, the brain becomes excited. By throwing odd words into seemingly normal sentences, Shakespeare surprises the brain and catches it off guard in a manner that produces a sudden burst of activity - a sense of drama created out of the simplest of things.”
Experts believe that this heightened brain activity may be one of the reasons why Shakespeare’s plays have such a dramatic impact on their readers.>>
Art teaches us how to feel and how to think.

It means art itself has the power to emotionally move us because we can relate to the work of art. We feel what the artist is feeling.

It means that all art has something to say, it helps people get through change, and get up, and make the change better.
I know, it's not the best description.

Just because it is quoted gives it no truth.
By someone asking for you to interpret this quote, they are making you to assume that it has real meaning.
Most quotes are taken out of context and people put upon them their own importance and ego.
The truth is all form of art is not a form of power but scribbling of sad little people wanting to be listened to.
