This parable emphasizes the need for watchfulness in Jesus' second Coming.
Jesus is the bridegroom, we are His bride.
Jesus doesn't even know when He is returning. Only the Father knows.

The oil means just that, they used olive oil to light torches.

Do a little research on Jewish wedding traditions.

The son prepares for his bride, then his father sends his son to get his bride-to-be for the wedding banquet. It could be day or night, so the bride-to-be keeps a torch lit so the bridegroom knows she is expecting him.

This is the same way Jesus is going to return, God our Father will send Him to receive His bride, so He's letting us know to always be expecting Him.

In a deep sense, the oil is typifies the Holy Spirit. The purpose of the parable is encourage preparedness for the coming of the Lord. The indwelling Holy Spirit helps ensures we are constantly on the ready. If our oil dries, symbolising that the Holy Spirit is quenched, we run around seeking replacement(in other 'oils'; activities, religiousities)--like the foolish virgins did. The Holy Spirit is given us as a mark of our connection to God. The parable points to why we should always be renewed in His Spirit, constantly fellowshiping with Him and being thereby prepared for the wedding.

The oil spoken of is Gods truth. Some had just enough until right up to the very end;
And, mind you, these were follows of Christ, they knew they wanted the oil, they knew it was important to have it, so why did they find that it wasn't quite enough right at the very end? This is why:
Because in the end days, Satan is coming pretending to be Christ, disguised as Christ.
Scripture tells us that good, well-meaning Christian folks, the mass majority of them - will be deceived by this fake. Why would that happen? Because the mass majority of church going christians are not taught the truth of Gods Word, which tells you over and over that Antichrist comes first, before the true Christ. Satan comes disguised as Christ on the 6th trump; the true Christ doesn't return until the 7th trump. Can you imagine the religious organizations and churches who will lead whole congregations of thousands of people to worship the devil?
They will fall all over each other trying to get to serve this fake. Good, church going Christians, who had enough of the truth to be Christians, but not enough to keep them from being deceived by Antichrist. And do you know what doctrine of today will help this along? The rapture doctrine. Think of the folks who will think that the first "jesus" who arrives on the scene is Christ come to rapture them to safety, when in fact, its Antichrist. Do you know the "left behind" books? Well, they tell people that they want to be the first taken, but if you go to scripture and back up to capture the subject and object of whats being discussed, you will find that the subject is the fact that Antichrist comes first. YOU WANT TO BE THE ONE LEFT BEHIND. The ones taken will be taken by Antichrist.
Not enough oil of truth that they might be saved. Right at the last possible moment.
This is why when the true Christ returns, so many will be hiding, wishing that they would die rather than face the true Christ. The true Jesus comes back and the mass majority of his children are devil worshippers. Think of the tv preachers who will lead so many to antichrist. It will be the biggest religious tent revival of all time;
And, the great deception of the end times.
There is a spiritual wedding to happen when the true Christ returns; He is looking for a virgin bride (spiritually speaking, of course).
What kind of Bride will he find when he returns and His bride is already with another husband? This is why Christ tells us in Mark 13 - Woe to those with child when I return - it doesn't mean a baby - a baby is a blessing. What it means is spiritually you were in bed with a different husband, get it?
If your fiancee has been away for awhile, and he returns, and you are with child, what does that mean? It means you weren't faithful. The thing is, if people would listen to Gods Word instead of some pastors words, they would have enough oil of truth to get them all the way thru until the true bridegroom comes.
its quite sad, really, but those who will not listen to God deserve to have the door slammed shut. It will not be a very pretty sight if the true Christ returns and you've been whoring around with another husband.
Unfortunately, that will be the case with many.

The wise virgins made sure that all aspects of their houses were in order, the foolish ones waited until the last minute & were out husbands & the Holy Spirit.

The oil does not represent the Holy Spirit. The oil is just oil.

The purpose of the parable is to tell the Jewish people, and us, to be prepared for the coming of Christ because we do not know when it will happen. If our hearts are not ready to welcome Him, we will be left out.

I think it was more of the lights they had, than the oil. It tells us that we must be on fire with God at all times because if we fool around and let our hearts go cold with god than when He comes we will be left behind.
