Three questions: Do you respect the God of the Bible? Do you respect Jesus? Do you respect the Word of God?
If you answered YES, you nothing to worry about. How you handle the Bible doesn't matter, it's whether you respect God.
That fear is not coming from God, as God has not given us a spirit of fear. The Bible is a gift to you! Would you be angry with your child for holding a book she gave you "wrongly?" Or would you want her to just read it, explore and learn? God wants that for you, so don't worry. Feel free to read it, and ask him questions in prayer. God loves you!
Reject that fear.

There is no improper way of reading the bible. It is the good news! It's not the book that is important, it's what is IN the book that is.
How do you read the bible? Well, if you are new to it, I would read the gospel of John. Why? It's easier to understand and relate too for those new to the bible usually. The right time? There is no "right" time, anytime is fine. Some do it in the afternoon, some in the morning, some on their lunch break, some before bed. It doesn't matter when, just read it at a time you will be awake enough to understand it. Even if all you read is a few passages a day, you will notice it will come back to you when it's decision time.
This is not a stupid question no matter what anyone says here, it is in fact a common question. So common that people tend to look over it as silly, they usually forget they had the same question when they started. :)

First, your question is not stupid! :) You never need to be afraid of touching the Bible. It is God's word for you--He wants you to study it and find out how much He loves you. There isn't really a "proper way" to read it, other than with a sincere heart and a teachable spirit. And the "right time" is today. The Bible says we don't know if we will even have a tomorrow, so "today is the day of salvation." A good place to begin reading is in the four gospels--Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Don't be afraid. God loves you so much! And He will show Himself through His word to all sincere seekers...including you. God bless you.

There is absolutely nothing in the bible (and I've read it cover to cover over 50 times) that says touching it in the wrong way is a sin.
There are several ways to go about it. You could start at Genesis and work your way through to Revelation.
You could start with Matthew and just read the New Testament.
You could pick a chapter from the old testament and a chapter from the new and do one per day..
There are tons of "read the bible in a year" calendars out there also.
You have nothing to fear from it.
I wish you well as you search for what's right for you.

I'm Catholic too and I've read the bible. Though, at first I was reluctant to do read it has help me. Especially, the book of Matthew where it tells the life of Jesus and his miracles. You get a feeling that you can't explain and your religion makes sense after reading those verses. Just do it and remember is Christ who is in that book. You have nothing to fear when you're with Christ.

I don't pretend to have the answers, but this is what I think so far in my life.
I believe the Bible with all of my being. If you are scared to touch the Bible, this might mean you are ready to learn truth on your own.
If you start to read life will became clearer, but you will likely wonder why the Churches you have been to are not doing what is says. The is good, continues to search, prey to God for truth no matter how uncomfortable it might seem at first.
I often prey, asking that he show me the truth so I may follow. Even if the truth means that I have to change everything again.
If you believe that he will bring you truth and you are willing to accept it no matter how many other people will try to tell you that it isn't the truth, then you will grow. Listen to what people have to say, but don't believe them without proving it to yourself with the Bible. Even me.

~ Jesus Loves You for standing for Him!
~ First, be thankful to the Lord for allowing you to have a bible of your own! Do you realize how many billions of people do NOT own a bible? Many have a few scriptures... perhaps a page or two from a bible... they share it with others...
~ Now, Pray that the Lord would give you understanding... before you start to read the Word of God... for example:
Lord Jesus, open my eyes to the words You have given your disciples and prophets... Open my hardened heart Lord... let me read Your words aloud, Lord, that I may hear Your voice speaking to my heart... show me the meaning of the Word as I read it, Lord... Let the Word I read minister to me as You would have me understand it. Thank You, Jesus... Amen.
~ Start with the Gospels... Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
~ Get involved with your local Bible Teaching Churches, like Calvary Chapel... Baptist... etc. Get involved in a Home Bible Study group... You will find support and help in understanding the many questions you will have as a growing in Christ Christian.

I wouldn't touch that book either. The writing is ameturish, the plot is predictable and lame, and the characters are two-dimensional and not very believeable. The bible isn't much more than a collection of war stories of a semi-illiterate band of desert dwelling nomads.

You should not be afraid of touching the Bible, it isn't a sin to touch it in any way or anything. There is nothing in there that says, "You shall not touch My Word." However, I am curious as to why you think this way? Who told you it would be a sin, or what hinted at it?

I don't think you can touch a bible in the wrong way. I suppose you should try handling it like any other book. Just open to page one and start reading. :) Good luck!
