I was wondering what Admiral Yamamto mean by this quote..

"I fear we have only awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve"

Can anyone tell me what he meant by this quote. If you don't already know, it deals with Pearl Harbor. Thanks!

The Japanese expected that with a stunning and complete victory over the American Fleet at Pearl Harbor, the US would capitulate the Pacific region to the Japanese -- essentially surrender what it could not defend.

Yamamoto realized that another possibility, even a liklihood, was that instead of surrendering the pacific, the US would be really pissed and open a can of whup @ss on the Japanese, which is of course what happened.

The quote is from a movie called "Tora Tora Tora" when Yamamoto hears that the attacked happened before war was officially declared on the US. I don't know if he ever fully said this line but it refers to the fact that he knew the great amount of resources that the US had.

Unlike others in the Japanese government and military Yamamoto knew what the USA was capable of. He had seen the oil wells of Texas and the manufacturing capabilities the US processed. He fully understood that while his contemporaries thought of the US as a group of scattered people with no common bond he knew that such a surprise attack would draw everyone together.

A large part of Yamamoto’s plan was to strike as soon as possible after war had been declared. However this was bungled by the diplomats n Washington.

He was talking about the unproven strength of the American Naval Fleet before we had been relegated to peacekeeping and watching war in Europe....Now all of sudden America would resolve its force and manpower to fueling a reataliation against the Nipponese.
America was a sleeping giant because we weren't involved in the world around us and when they woke up thats when all the trouble started.

he was talking about the unproven strength of the American Naval Fleet....Until then we had been relegated to peacekeeping and watching war in Europe....Now all of sudden America would resolve ("wake-up") its force and manpower to fueling a reataliation against the Nipponese.
America had been a "sleeping giant" because we were away from the action....until the action came to us....
When someone becomes resolved to do something...they can almost be unstoppable.

"Midway--the movie" is one of the greatest war movies ever...
Admiral Yamamoto says this line in the movie.

well its like this.. you know in some films when guys are fighting and one guy hits another one really, really hard but instead of having the desired impact of taking him out 100% the guy that gets hit doesnt flinch at all then he gets really mad, and the original guy thast threw the punch then realises he's now in really big trouble... like in the coffee shop fight with marty mcfly in back to the future?... well its like that
