First of all, find another vet. There are many fairly common problems in cats that can cause the symptoms you describe. Death is not a recommended cure for any of them.
There is something else we don't know about here, or your vet should consider another line of work.

I recently answered a similiar question to yours a few minutes ago. My cat had similiar symptoms but began to lose weight as well. I found out that she had hyperthyroidism. Your vet should be able to test for that with some bloodwork. Then I found a site called radiocat and they treated her for it. It was expensive but effective. She is a happy healthy 13 year old now. It happened when she was 10. It was a crazy process that involved radioactive iodine, She had to be quarantined for two weeks till her radioactive levels went down. But is was well worth it as she has been part of our family since she was 6 months old.

I hope it is something more simple like an allergy, fleas, or something easily curable. Before you take a drastic action such as putting her down check into Radiocat. Not all vets know about this place. But my cat is a living testimony that what they do works.

She must be licking herself too much if she has bald patches. Nine is not that old of a cat. What did the vet say was wrong with her. Bald patches isn't a reason to put a cat to sleep.
Feline leukemia isn't as long as you don't have other cats. My vet thought my cat had that--he didn't. He wanted me to put him to sleep and I refused. I fed him chicken and rice baby food until he got better.
You can also try an Elizabethan collar so she doesn't pull out her hair.

I have been reading some testimonials from a web site regarding a new cat food for cats that have allergy and itchy skin problems. Several of the testimonials say that their cats have had itchy skin, allergies, bald spots, etc for months and even years and have tried everything. But a few weeks after putting the cats on this food, their cats recovered and now seem like totally diffeent cats (they even included pictures of their kitties. You might seriously think about switching your kitty to this cat food. Its called "Natural Balance® Venison & Fresh Green Pea Formula" and is available in pet specialty stores.
Check their website for more info: google "natural balance pet food"
Natural Balance cat and dog food is NOT in th list of recalled petfoods.
I use Natural Balance canned Indoor formula for my cats now - just switched them since the bad pet food scare last Friday.

If you don't think the vet is giving you advice that you (or your cat) can live with or is helping, you can seek a second opinion. Find a vet who specializes in skin disorders - they will usually advertise this. Maybe a different vet will have a different take on the problem.

If they have ruled out allergies and the like, then ask the vet to prescribe her some kitty valium, it's preferable to putting her down.
It sounds like a stress issue, something is upsetting her. Is she neutered? If not, that can help to calm her down and have her less stressed.

I've heard that heart worms can cause this..they dig at their fur trying to get to the worms they feel inside...it's a sad disease for animals to endure..check w/your vet because in advanced stages, this causes more pain than would putting them to sleep. 9 yrs. old? She's obviously lived a great life and let her rest in peace if need be!

It could be an accute allergy to fleas. My cat has it, and she did the same thing. I now give her Advantage treatments every two weeks instead of every month, and I give her baths regularly.
