Well I am also trying to pursue a singing career. Well your lucky. You are in Oklahoma and where I am things like that don't come true. But anyways you should sing at places. Sing in the public. Try for some auditions somewhere. But if you are 16 or older you should try for American Idol.

Take as many voice lessons as you can afford. Try different teachers from time to time. You will learn something new from each of them. It is very important to perfect breath control, pitch control and harmony. Sing in public every chance you get. The more at ease you are, the more people will want to hear you sing again and again. If you want to go to a good college in Oklahoma, check out Oklahoma City University. Many of their music students go on to huge careers.

Lots of famous singers and songwriters come from Oklahoma. Hoyt Axton is one of my favorites (his mom, Mae Boren Axton, wrote Heartbreak Hotel for Elvis Presly and Hoyt wrote Joy to the World for Three Dog Night, Never Been to Sapin for Three Dog Night, The Pusher for Steppenwolf, and The No No SAong for Ringo Starr. He also had a hit back in the 60s with Ken Ramsey called Greenback Dollar. People from wide open space like Oklahoma, Texas, Canada and Alaska often find thier creative sid simply because they are not overwhelmed with stimulas. It isn't so much where you come from as who you connect with. Wou have to do the same thing that everybody else does:

1. Practice your ummm neck off

2. Perform for anyone and anything you can get into

3. Stay current with what is popular . This is where most people have trouble because they feel that listening to others will stifle thier voice. It's really like having the big box of crayons though. The more colors or ideas you have, the better the picture, or your career is going to turn out.

4. Get to know a few of the people who made it. Read about thier lives, go to see them perfrom, look them up on the internet, find out how they got their break and figure out if you can do something similar.

5. Be as decent as you can to everybody. You never know when that person who seems to be wasting your time, might be or know the someone who can get your foot in the door!

6. Always be ready. Get your financial affairs in order. Avoid outstanding debt. If someone is willing to take a chance on you, make sure that your talent is the only thing they have to gamble on. So many people would have been succsesful except they had this 600 pound gorrilla sitting on their shoulder. It might have been drugs, gambling, a bankruptcy, a lifestyle choice that made them less than attractive to an agent or manager, or even just a bad reputation. You should never have to say "but first I gotta tell you about" and you should never have to try to hide it. With technology today, it's almost impossible anyway.

Finally, you have to decide what "make it" really means to you. If you aren't willing to leave your home town and take the huge risk of constant travel, hours of boredom, thousands of people you don't know (and maybe don't want to know) and the temptations of the consessions many performers make just to get through the day, you might want to redefine your idea of "making it!" A lot of people make it and the world never hears of them at all. They have the love, support and admiration of their community, family, and friends and they've figured out that this is all they need. Good luck in any case and if you ever get famous, be sure to sing one of my songs, thanks.

Try going to college and majoring in vocal performance. I don't know what type of singing you are referring to, but I'll just assume you are referring to opera and use that as my example.
When you are in college, you'll no doubt take roles in many college productions, and hopefully you will get some good roles when you are an upperclassman. Those roles, combined with your education, will look great on your resume. Then audition for some opera companies, and work your way up. You will be a resident of your opera company, but if you are good, other companies or orchestras will invite you to be a guest performer. Of course, this takes considerable talent, but with dedication you can do it. If college isn't your thing, or if you are not a classical performer, then shell out a few dollars to record about four demo songs, and distribute your demo to as many places as possible. You will have to market yourself. If you don't play an instrument but need backup music, post an ad in the paper or on craigslist looking for a band. Maybe you can start out with a few small gigs in coffeehouses or bars. Post fliers all over town. Have your friends invite their friends, who will invite their friends, etc. to your shows. Submit some songs to your local college radio station. College radio stations or public access radio stations often have shows featuring local artists.
You'll be very busy. Just don't be lazy, and it might just work out.
I forgot to mention - you need to be talented too.

Go to your favorite restaurants/bar and ask if you can sing on a night that is relatively slow, where diners can conentrate on your singing and music.
