If you are on Windows XP, you can install both Japanese and Chinese writing (and viewing). Just head to control panel, Regional and Language Settings, and just use the pull down menus to install the languages you want. For Chinese and Japanese you will also have to install the "east asian type" also located in that menu.

I might try downloading openoffice.org. It's like office, but FREE. I use it. It only takes a couple minutes to download. It's pretty slick.
