They haven't gone "rotten" per se. They have just been in the onion drawer and they've started to grow roots. Just curious about it!

Just the opposite, Jas!

When they grow roots, that means they are healthy, despite the age. They are perfectly suitable for eating. Just cut the stem off when you slice them, and remove the inner green part.

yI never heard it was bad. However they were a little tough and not as tasty. Didn't get ill either. I imagine the growing process consumes the moisture, so like potatoes the begin to shrivel when they sprout.
