The door closed on my (almost) one year old's middle finger this afternoon. It got caught in that metal part of the threshold and was bleeding in four spots, along with from under his fingernail. His first birthday is tomorrow and I just feel so bad! He won't keep a bandaid on it, and even though it stopped bleeding, I'm still worried about it! Will his fingernail die and fall off? The door didn't close all the way on his finger, I stopped it before it did that, and I don't see any bruising (30 minutes later)... just want to know what will probably happen...? Should I tell his doctor about it when he goes on Thursday?

Youre son IS NOT going to lose his finger. Maybe his finger nail, but certainly not his finger. Some of these answers are a little exaggerated. We're talking about a door, not a knife. You're probably really nervous, since he's such a little guy, but he'll be just fine. When you go to the doctor tell him what happened and he'll look at that. Until then, just check it from time to time, make sure it's not swelling. It will bruise and probably become a little sore, but there's not much the doctor can do about a finger. It sounds like he popped the little veins under his nail finger nail. This and when you pop them under the skin is what happens when you get a black and blue. Think of when you stub your toe; It hurts for a little while and sometimes turns black and blue. It'll go away and heal in about a few days to a week.
If your sons finger is really bothering him, he'll cry. Put some ice on it, cuddle him and read him a book or something along those lines. I agree with whoever said to try a pictured bandaid. See if he'll keep that on. Otherwise, don't worry about it. You won't want to put one on him when he's going to sleep anyway so he doesn't try to eat it.
I went through the same kind of panics when my boys were around this age. Slamming heads on tables, burning little fingers, falling off beds. They're now 9, 6 and 2 1/2. It's only the beginning, but youll get through them all!
Good luck and congrats on him being one!

That happened to my son, but his finger was nearly severed. You should mention it to the doctor, and go get one of those finger splint things the doctor would put on a broken finger to help protect it. His fingernail might fall off, but it probably won't bother your son that much.

i would tell the doc when you go in, if swelling or discoloration becomes extreme, I wouldnt take any chances and go to the doc/hospital right away. If his fingernail turns purple he will lose the fingernail but that's about it. Just watch for extreme changes or your son showing extra sensitivity to it, it will hurt but he should be able to move it. If all seems ok just put paroxide on it daily and neosporin. Darn kids hurting themselves, breaks your heart doesnt it!? Well good luck and congrats on your baby turning a year!

About all I can say is OUCH!!! The poor little guy. The nail could come off. What
about trying to use children's picture bandages and see if he will keep that on?
When they are that age--well, good luck. And I hope in spite of all of this that he
has a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Might be a good idea to tell his Dr. about his "boo
boo". : } Been there too many times with kids and accidents.

Tell your doctor to have a look. If he's not in any apparent distress & it's not broken, he'll be ok. My son dropped something heavy on his toe at about that age and the nail fell off, but it does grow back!

What the h*ll is wrong with you?! Take your baby to the doctors now! He could lose his finger or at least get a severe infection.
