I don't know why but Elmer Dean sounds like a good name for a more rural living situation and George Dean for an urban one.

If you live in the USA, I can guarantee you that if you name him "Elmer", his schoolmates will call him "Elmer Fudd" until he gets big enough to beat them to a pulp. I suffered "Teddy Roosevelt" (and being a 6'1" 145-pound weakling) until I made my escape to college.
President Roosevelt was an OK guy who spoke clearly and wasn't a cartoon character. I could live with it. Elmer Fudd was a cartoon character who hunted "wabbits".
Unless a great great uncle left a bequest of a million or two to the first male child to be named "Elmer", I wouldn't saddle a child with it.

My father's name was very old and very ethnic. There was no way I could have given it to my son. It's much like Elmer. But maybe you could use my solution. No kid bothers with another kid's middle name. I gave my son both of his grandfather's names for his middle names (so he has 2) and a nice, solid first name that gives him no problems. This way he honors everyone without being dishonored himself. He's very cool with it, too, now that he's 17 and can see I wasn't "burdening" him.

Sound likes Ted Pack has a pretty strong aurgument against using Elmer, and I have to agree.
However, I toss this idea out to you: use your wife's maiden name as your son's middle name. It will give him a connection to both families and isn't as clumsy as the hyphens used by certain folks.
Both of my children carry their mom's name, and I couldn't be prouder.
