I think you mean the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. A 70-700 would be pretty sweet. The Sigma provides better image quality.
The Sigma 70-200 is for people that would rather have a $1600 Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 but they're $700 short. Still, the Sigma does have the constant f/2.8 and optically it's very good. It's from their EX line, which is marketed to pros.
The Nikon 18-200 is for people that want an all-in-one lens and are willing to sacrifice speed and image quality for this convenience. It doesn't even pretend to offer professional image quality.
Both have a street price of around $900 and both are worth it... but for different reasons.

Yes, in this particular comparsion the Sigma (70-200, not 70-700) wipes the floor with the Nikkor as far as IQ goes.
