Oh YOUR poppy cok.
Satan wanted more power than God, he tried to get other angels to go against God. Lucifer was God's favorite and chosen angel....so imagine that!

Or could it be that the jews never believed Satan was a fallen angel and that the Greek invasion in the time between the testaments is what brought that whole concept of a fallen angel to that area of the middle east, and was perpetuated later on by the Catholic church who wanted to use that doctrine to subdue indigenous people?
just a thought.

Satan does know that he is going to lose. BUT the point is that he wants to make himself to be God. His pleasure is derived from getting disobediance and people that follow him. It was PRIDE that got him kicked out in the first place. and pride by nature is competitive. He's just compeating with God.
The same way criminals commit crimes, knowing someday they'll probably get caught.

the irony of your question is that even today, PEOPLE are still going against Gods will...even though they to will surely lose. Look at it in that context, and it may help you make sense of why Satan thought he could get away with it.

You've never taken on a fight you thought you couldn't win, when you thought you were in the right? That's sad. Think about it. Satan either felt he had a chance to win or he felt that he was justified and absolutely had to fight, no matter what the cost.

Perhaps you missed the part wherein I stated that Lucifer is not all-knowing, therefore he could easily conclude that he has some hope of prevailing against God.
Or perhaps you missed all the other reasonable illustrations by others using the disobedient child-parent analogy.

he did it because he was jealous of God's power. he wanted to be like God and have his power and control. this is why he was sent to hell where he could do whatever he wants and rule there. now he just wants more company and subjects, thats why he makes people commit sins. he of course knew that God was the most powerful but he was too ambitious to be like God. think of it this way, why do criminals commit crime? they know the law is powerful and catches thousands of criminals every year yet they still do it. its because of greed, etc.

From an Agnostic perspective I'd refer to the movie Prophecy with Christopher Walken saying
"I'm going to have a bunch of monkeys tell me what to do."

He was envious to the point of rebellion and purposely opposing God. He coveted what he couldn't have and grew angry about it.
