I walk a lot and because of this have developing this strange hard skin all over my heel. I was just wondering how I'd get this all away. Its rather painful.

I currently have my foot covered in this surgical sock like thing. I have tried this special stone you get out of the chemist, but that is very painful. Anybody got any tips to get rid of it? Thank you. P.S. I'm male, 27 y.o.

Well i usually use a variety of things to soften my feet. I don't like the stones you are talking about because they can be awfully rough. I have found these like foot file things. They look similar to sandpaper and work the same way (find them in the nail care section of any drug store or supermarket, about $2). I usually lather my feet up with a nice thick body wash in the shower and scrub away. Although you can also do it out of the shower, just soften your feet in a bath first. When i get out i put a nice thick lotion on them. Also i do that before i go to bed at night. After a few weeks of this, you will notice a difference.

And considering you are male, you may not like my next suggestion. But a nice pedicure will give you a nice start to softening those heels. They will take off any callouses and scrub them with a pumice stone and file. They are amazing! I am a huge fan of pedicures!

Use the pumice stone for the superficial skin only. Then wash your feet and apply Vaseline while they are still wet. Put on clean white cotton socks and sleep in them. A few nights of this and your feet should get better. If they don't, or if your heels start to crack see a podiatrist or a dermatologist.

Sometimes it helps to change your shoes. If you're wearing the same shoes to work every day, buy a different brand or style and alternate them. The ones you are wearing may be too narrow for you, too. Have your feet measured for width and see if that helps. A doctor once told me that people would have none of the usual foot problems if they just went barefooted all the time. Have you ever seen the feet of some of these little old ladies that wore high heeled shoes with pointed toes to work every day of their life? If you have, then you know what he means. Good luck.

Heel Hard Skin

The best way to combat this problem is to bathe your feet daily and then exfoliate the hard skin with a pumice stone or ped egg. Apply moisturizer such as aqueous cream or E45. If you do this daily just before bed you can sleep in socks to lock in the benefit. The other thing you could try is one of those Fish Spa's where you sit with your feet in a pool and the fish feed on the dead skin on your feet. You may find your shoes comfortable but it sounds like they are creating friction points on your feet and these are the areas that are developing the hard skin. Walking barefoot is great for your feet in many ways, so you don't need to stop if you don't want to but it does harden your skin naturally. Socks are also comfortable to wear around the house and will provide a barrier to keep your feet soft. Walking barefoot on gravel will not exfoliate your feet, it is too harsh and will add to the problem. Grass is good to walk on barefoot and if you live near a sandy beach this might be better than gravel as an exfoliant, but don't overdo it or it will become counter productive. It will take time but you will get results with a daily routine. Hope this helps.

I've read in the newspaper that you can use Vicks Vaporub on your heels and it will make your heel smooth. I haven't tried it yet but the person who wrote about it said that she used it for two days and brought about great results.

I used to get that when I would run...soaking my feet in warm water and Epsom salt took care of it. If that doesn't help they have some other more direct foot bath additives in any pharmacy.

Oh, try Dr. Sholes (sp?) jell inserts for your shoes from now on. Take care!

Go to drugist, chemist, or beauty supply and ask for a 'Credo' callous trimmer.

Wild guessing... maybe soaking in hot (as hot as you can stand) water for a VERY long period of time? Then try the stone?

My condition isn't nearly as bad as yours, but this is what i do.
