When you think they are ready. If you see the baby trying to hold the spoon let them thats how they learn. It doesn't matter if they do a mess. If your child is older in age almost near the year then you need to take the initiative and try to teach your child. Once you see them trying try then to teach them how not to be messy.

I started teaching my son at nine months, but i'm holding his hands through it all. That's a good way to start. So when it somes to them doing it all by themselves they would already have some idea of what it is all about. But it still depends on how advanced your child is. Nothing beats a try.

My two girls started around 9 months. I started by guiding their hands with the spoon to their mouths. They will get it EVERY WHERE! But, that's the fun part. Try not to teach them with chocolate pudding. LOL

when ever he/ she is ready to hold a spoon by it self it is good to help then being independable that way your kid will grow and will learn thet he or she will not always will have someone to be there ( of course you willbe ) but that way kids will learn more and they will feel good to be independable and free to do what big kids do, so lte him / her do all the mess so he\ she can learn , but in the mean while tech them how to eat correctly and little by little he/ she will eat witout doing so much mess good luck!!!

If they can grasp things I say give her a spoon to play with at meal time.
She will understand soon enough what it is for. But learning now what she can do with it by observing you, she may learn soon how to use it.

As soon as they show an interest, but they will probably not get much to their mouth until they are well over a year.
It is never too soon to expose your little one to new experiences
