Great question! Why is it that only the Wise Men knew? And why didn't they spread the word? Surely they would have found room at the inn if they'd known.

First of all, it's not always that easy to verify if a woman is a virgin or not. Hymen can break from common recreational things.

Secondly, who would believe them? Most people would probably think Mary had an affair since she and Joseph were not living together yet. So they had a compelling reason to be hush hush.

But beside the point, you probably don't accept the text no matter what it claimed. If it claimed Mary went about announcing that she was pregnant and going to give birth to the Messiah and many skeptics including doctors came to test this claim and they verified indeed that a virgin was pregnant, you wouldn't believe it any more or less than now, so what's your point?

The funny thing about a prophecy that predicts the coming of a Messiah, is that inevitably a lot of "false Messiahs" will come along to mess things up. According to the histories, there were always at least one of them stirring things up in first-century Palestine. This was just one of many reasons why Mary could have told any story she could dream up and nobody would have believed her.

The hush hush was because it would be a crime punishible by death (stoning) if an unwed Jewish girl was to be found pregnant before Marraige. and that is what Mary found herself in.

Mary was the descendant of King David. That made Jesus heir to the throne. He could have been killed as a child. They tried anyway, but failed.

Everything happens in God's timing. Remember Herodes, and what happened to all little boys. Angel warned Joseph and Mary and they escaped.: )

I am not sure at the time they realised it was teh forefillment of profasi and probably at that time verifiing her verginity was not a question asked.

Because she wasn't a virgin, only later would people buy the story.
