Apparently you do not follow any type religion. We know the body will eventually return to dust, but what happens to the spirit will depend on what you believe.
You might want to investigate the various religions. Many people get a lot of comfort from it.

You are not going to get one concrete answer to this question, since everyone has their own notions about this. However, I personally believe in reincarnation, so when a person dies, unless they've reached spiritual perfection, they reincarnate back into life as many times as it takes to purify their soul and be "worthy" of going to heaven. The reason why I believe in this is because there has been a study where people were put under hypnosis and were asked to go backwards in their life and recall events that happened to them. They were asked to first go a few years back, then more, and then they were asked to say what they are seeing as they go into the time of their birth, and then before that until they are able to go to their previous life, or lives. Some people undergoing this hypnosis began speaking in languages that they had no idea of knowing - one woman was speaking a language that the hypnotist couldn't identify, so she sent the transcript of their session to a group of scientists who were able to identify the language as ancient egyptian. Another person in a hypnosis session said that she saw herself in a previous life being attacked with a spear which pierced through her heart. When she came out of the hypnosis, and listened back to what she said on tape, she showed the hypnotist that she had a strange birthmark all her life which was on her breast, right at her heart area. These are just some of the many instances where people were able to confirm for themselves beyond the shadow of a doubt that they had past lives. So far, there has been no clear data proving any other notions of what happens after death. No one can prove that heaven or hell exists, or that there is no such thing as a soul - whereas there has been extensive research about reincarnation where things were proven, so this is why I believe in it.

The truth is no one knows. I don't care what your belief is until you die you can never really know. And even then we may never know. If we go to heaven or hell well then we know. But if nothing happens then we can't know because we are dead.
