Why does everyone express such a negative opinion about the Bible and its teachings?

Fear of change. When you accept a religion..whichever it may be, it requires a lifestyle change. Unfortunately, people like to sin..and anything that may make them guilty about it, is frowned upon. You'll see alot of mockers on this board. taking a verse of scripture completely out of context and hailing it as proof of Gods non-existence, in a feeble effort to eliminate doubts they may have.

There are some good stories in the bible. Then there are those that are often overlooked by religious people.

Ex:

Deuteronomy 6:14-15 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are around you; (for the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you;) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.
Summary: God will have anyone who worships another deity put to death.

Exodus 21:7 And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as
the menservants do.
Summary: okay to sell your daughter into slavery

Exodus 35:2 Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you a holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.
Summary: self-explanatory

So now I ask you why so many people have such a positive opinion of the bible.

I was terrorized at a young age and throughout my age about Hell and damnation. It's been such a focus of so many people that I've met, but what I'd come to find out is that it's just they're own insecurities that made them be this way. I can't hold a grudge because I don't believe they could really control their fears, but I did become dubious about what I was to believe from then on.

Afraid... No. The negative opinions are because of those people who, in the name of the bible and its teachings, use it as a cloak of ignorance or worse, as a weapon. The bible in itself is merely a book. It is the context in which it is found which results in the negative opinions...

I think those who have a negative opinion have Satan in their lives, they just may not know it.

Before I believed in Jesus, I would make fun of things in the bible that I didn't understand. Believing in Jesus means you have to be responsible for your actions and have to exercise the self - disipline to follow His teachings, not just do whatever the hell you want. I think deep down people are afraid of this as they know they sin.

I don't think people are afraid of the Bible. Judging by most of the grammar and spelling in these posts, however, I'm convinced that most people live in mortal terror of English textbooks.

Everyone doesn't. But there's lots to be negative about. I'll start off with Numbers 31: God's prophet orders genocide, the slaughter of women and children already taken captive and the dividing of the virgin girls among the troops. We call those war crimes and hang people for that stuff. But we have to remember, "God is love." Yeah, right.

I can't answer for everyone but can for myself. I did some research on the Bible's history and didn't like what I found.

Perhaps it's because the Bible was so poorly edited--with so many obvious flaws & contradictions left in it--yet "afraid" is the wrong word--try "amuzed"

I think it's because people don't like TRUTH! People don't want to hear the ten commandments & all that God wants to do in order to keep us from falling into the subtle deceptions of the adversary because they want to continue to live the way THEY want to live.

God created hell (Hades) for the devil & his angels, not for us--we decide to go there by rejecting the truth of God's Word.
