Such a big diffrence between the two! Parrots, depending on the species, can live over 100 years OLD!! Parakeets live only years. Most parrots can talk as well. The biggest diffrence I found is that parots can not just be left in a cage! The owner has to spend up to 4-6 hours holding the parrot, loving it, and many many other things. Parrots can be very messy and very loud! Some parots have the mentality of a 2 year old child. With my parrot I have found that I treat her ,the bird, and she acts like a two year old. I would say that parrots are more responceability than a dog! Do LOTS of reading and research before buying a parot!!!

A parakeet is a parrot. If you're talking about one specific bird that is named parakeet, know that this name only applies in the US. Their actual name is budgerigar, and they're one of the two smallest parrots, the other being a parrotlet.

So nothing. Since "parakeets" are actually parrots, there is no difference other than size, and if you want to get a little more detailed, diet and climate/area of origin. Though parakeets applies to a broad group of other parrots as well. It basically encompasses birds of bulky builds with long tails in comparison, and it categorizes any bird from the smallest budgie to the large Alexandrine Parakeet.

Technically parrots have short tails, parrakeets have long tails. In the United States when most people say parrakeet they mean a Budgerigar, a small parakeet from Australia. Many other birds are correctly refered to as parakeets, such as Indian Ringnecked Parakeet, (aka Rose-ringed Parakeet), Rosella Parakeet, all of the conures and many others. There are parrots that are smaller than parakeets and vice versa.

If you are refering to just Budgerigars, they are smaller, of course. They are also shorter lived than many species. They are great companions, particularly males. They are capable of talking and are a great first bird.

HUGE DIFFERENCES!!!!

everything from size, appearence, color, temperament, eggs, sociability, mimicking.... there are countless things!

They just happen to look alike.

On average, parrots are pickier and VERY difficult to care for.
Parakeets (called budgerigars usually or budgie for short) are easier to care for, but still are FULL of personality.

Both need plenty of attention, a balanced diet, and the opportunity to fly for about 2 hours everyday.

don't underestimate birds. they are very intelligent and diverse creatures!
