I have two thoughts:
One offer him an alternative. Carry a small chew toy when you are out and he attempts to grab a rock, stop him abruptly and give him the toy. When its in his mouth praise him and tell him that s the right toy or
Shake a can of pennies everytime he goes for the stones. When he looks at you like your nuts praise him.

He thinks he is doing something good and wants to play with you or save it for you. Yes I know this can ruin a dogs teeth, I had a jack that was termed a waller. I took him on country walks but if he got the scent of a rabbit ( because they live in walls sometimes ) he used to bite the stones trying to get at the rabbit, his teeth were all flat and blunt. Try taking a hard rubber toy and throw it for him, he will think this is great and come to you for more thus taking his mind away from the stone thing.

Give up, I have seen hundreds of boxers through all the clinics I've worked for and I don't think I can remember any that didn't grind their teeth all the way down! It is a boxer thing. They have to chew and they usually grind the teeth down even with the gums, it's kinda weird. The others have a few ideas that may work to train him not to, but just know that it seems to be inherant to the breed, so you may not be able to teach it out of him. Look into doggy dentures

Ya, The Dog Whisperer had an episode just like that where the dog was always going after rocks.
It's a great show to watch and the guy knows dogs better than anyone I've ever seen.

A dog needs a reason to stop picking up stones. Dogs don't listen to logic. Thus. you need to create a reason for the dog to stop doing it.
Buy empty squirt water bottle. You need to be consistant. Squirt the dog in the face when he picks up a stone. It won't take him long to realize that picking up stones isn't worth the bother.. You will be amazed how quickly this works.

I had a pit bull that did that. He'd actually hide them around the house so he always had some to play with when I took them away. I think he eventually outgrew it after he got out of the puppy teething stage.
Find him some toys that taste better. I used to buy the Kongs. They are great for breeds like that with really strong jaws. Put kibble, treats, or even peanut butter in the middle of it. It used to keep my dog busy for hours - and away from things he shouldn't chew, like rocks and furniture!

Check out the Dog Whisperer. He's a miracle worker at training dogs and helping in situations like yours. In fact, I seen a t.v. episode he did on a dog that had the same problem. You can find some of his videos at Wal-Mart and he comes out on t.v. all the time I think it's the discovery channel that has him. Look for him, you'll find him and I'm telling you this guy does miracles. Good luck.

my dog did this and all i do is let her carry a ball everywhere now and she doesnt want to loose it because i throw it for her and she chases it this is fun for her so the thought of her losing her ball makes her not want to put it down to play with stones
