my mom just passed and she has a credit card with my grandmother name on it, my grandma passed away 2 yrs ago, and they wont let me cancel it without knowing the primary account holders (my grandma) last 4 digits of social security number.

You can go to the town offices and get copies of your mother's and grandmother's death certificates (A matter of public record) and submit them to the credit card company. This is all they should require for the accounts to be closed. If they give you any problems, report them immediately to the Better Business Bureau. You can also contact Social Security and have them forward that information without you having to obtain a copy.

Talk to personnel or a supervisor with credit cards, perhaps there is a way you can go around this. Also was there any life insurance or did they pay into it for the credit card balance to be paid?

That is obsurd! You should call and ask to talk to a manager. If these people have passed, how would they expect anyone to have this information? Maybe you could just send them a copy of the death cert. for proof. Give them a call and ask that. I'm sorry to hear of your losses.

I've just dabbled in genealogy and have a suggestion. One of the few sites I've found is the social security death index. I have no idea if her name would be in there (I can't seem to find one grandma of mine that died in 1983), but I have found others....Try it.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the way to get it. they have policies for deceased account holders, you will have to send a copy of the death certificate.. sorry for your loss

It must be listed somewhere, on some papers you have filed away.......like an old insurance card.

if you cant find her medicare card, which has her no. on it, then if you cant find anything , see a lawyer. you are NOT responsible for her credit card.. though they may TRY to collect.
