I agree... whether it is just as a friend, family or significant other, you shouldn't tell someone you love them if you don't. It could give them false ideas and make them think things about you that they otherwise wouldn't have. It's a simple little lie that has the potential to perpetuate into something much worse.
I have experienced this, both telling and being told. Though I know now it wasn't the right thing to do, I told someone I loved him (when I didn't) because I was afraid of hurting him right before he left to go to Iraq. It's been nearly five years now so I don't think he is coming home, but I don't regret telling him if it gave him some kind of hope, because I cared about him a lot and did love him as a friend, but he meant as being in love and I wasn't there yet. Someone has told me they loved me and I found out later it was a false love because everything we were based on turned out to be a lie.

I say I love chocolate ice cream, but I may commit to praline frozen yogurt. Either way no one is disappointed.
I once found myself incredibly happy with the sunny day, the beach and the company and I said 'I love you,' to the person I was with, but I qualified it 'with at least for today', he took it for what it was and there were no hurt feelings.
If we are speaking of using 'I love you' as a reason to get something out of someone like money or sex of course its wrong.
In my distant youth so many men told me they loved me, I never believe a single one, I mean even I knew what they wanted. But when the right one came along it took him a year to tell me he loved me, and I knew he meant it. I think you can want to belive that someone loves you so much that you don't look to closely at if he could possibly mean it or not.

I don't think it is OK at all for someone to say they love you and not mean it I had a guy tell me he loved me after only dating for two months and then he cheated on me we broke up and he told me that he really never loved me at all he just said it to be nice what a crock of poop I think if you say you love someone you should really mean it

no it is not okay. I have had someone say it and take it back. It was the worst feeling in the world. But then I had to keep in mind that he was half crazy.

what is your problem? why do you have to ask for "moral support" for something that obvious?
Lying was not, is not and will never be OK. If people around you have trouble grasping this extremely simple concept, I suggest that you need to change your friends.

No! That means their lying to u. No one made them say it. You should only say the L-word when u mean it. It's a powerful word.
It can change the whole meaning and or situation.
