For people far away, just let them know you're throwing a party and say you wish they could be there but understand it is probably too far. That's an invitation without putting too much pressure on them. It can be done over the phone.

If you really want someone in particular to visit, you could offer to pay part or all of the transportation costs.

Don't forget to invite your new neighbors too.

I would only invite the people who you think are most likely to attend, otherwise your invite might come off as "grubbing for housewarming gifts"- especially if there are some relatives who are old fashioned- and do not approve of the two of you living together outside of marriage.
I would send out cards announcing your "change of address" to those friends and family members who obviously live too far away to attend-fyi- people will travel long distances for weddings or baby showers- but not housewarming parties, and put a special note inside letting them know of your good news; that you bought your first home!
I would then send out party invites to only those who are most likely to come to your housewarming party....

Send a note along with the invite telling them that you want to include them in the housewarming but you will certainly understand if they cannot make it due to the distance. You've covered all bases then.

Invite your family if you feel that it is right to do so. If your family cannot make it from New York, then that will be ok. You sent them the invitation and now the ball would be in their court. Good Luck, Have Fun and Congratulations on your new house!

close family and friends in other states, wouldnt mind an invite, people you havent spoken to in years could do without one. try an invite that has a photo of the new house, along with your new address & telephone number. dont be upset if they dont show. they will most likely send a gift & congratulation.

If you don't think they will attend then send them a new home/address announcement instead of an invitation. They have really nice one's at Kinko's and you will see the obvious difference between he invitation and the announcement!

Yes - definitely invite whoever you want. Just make sure you have enough food and stuff if they decide to come. And maybe a place to stay.

You can let them know about the party if you like but there is a really good book that helps answer all of these questions. I do not have my book handy at the moment.

But the book tells you answers to stuff like this.
