My son is 30m old and still takes naps in his toddler bed. First you need to make sure his room is child proof. Next make sure the room is dark and ONLY has children books in it. My son knows that he is only to do quiet act. such as books if he is not yet sleepy. He gets bored with this activity quickly and finally sleeps. Not every day is perfect but 90% of the time he naps. Good luck.

At 18 months my son was done with naps. He would not fall asleep even if I layed down with him. You can't force anyone to go to sleep, and forcing him to stay in his bed will turn naptime into a negative experience. Instead, try having quiet time. Read books with him, do a puzzle, any calm activity. As he gets a little bit older, have him pick a "quiet area" where he can sit for a while and look at books, color, or do something that will calm him a bit. Try playing soft classical music in the background. This might result in an earlier bedtime, and by then he will be tired and ready to sleep.

Remember, not every child is the same. My oldest, stopped taking naps as soon as I put him in a youth bed. His younger sister and brother took naps until they were 5.
Some kids need the naps and some don't.

Yeah, I hate to say, once you move them into a bed you pretty much kiss the naps goodbye. Is there any way you can put him in a pack -n- play or something like that for his naps? So at least he can't get out? I kept my kids in cribs until they were three - mainly for this reason, everyone I know that moved their kids to a bed lost the naps.

Good Luck with that. This is a hard age to make them do something without breaking their will, or yours!
Stand firm. He will get out of his bed, whenever he feels like it. I am not sure at 18 months he understand.
I always rock my youngest child to sleep, she is 31 months, but she is my last one, and I honestly do spoil her. She and I both deserve it. They are only little once.

I personally use my daughters toddler bed for night time only.
In the day she will sleep on the sofa, on my bed, in her pushchair or wherever.
If he is tired he will go to sleep, you can't force him to.
