At a landfill, the trash is compacted and covered with layers of dirt. Little decomposition takes place because of the lack of air and water. The sanitary landfills are lined with plastic liners to avoid leaching of liquids. Secure landfills are better lined.

Recycling does not place unless the load is pre separated. There are places to leave recyclables, but the landfill does not do the separating. Much of our garbage could be recycled and composted.

None of it gets recycled. Once it's in the landfill, that's it.

It gets moistened, then buried under a layer of dirt, and compacted by a bulldozer driving over it. Here in California, that happens repeatedly. Eventually, a park is built on top of the site.

In other places, the trash will decompose (it's too dry in California for that to happen at an appreciable rate).

Depends on the type of trash. organic matter decomposes, plastics will probably remain until the end of the earth (almost), metals will surely oxidize (if they can), etc.
