If the debt that you owe money on is the car, then yes, they can take it. In other words, is the money they are trying to collect, your car payment? If it is, then the car is collateral for that loan so they can repossess the car.
If the debt you owe money on is for credit cards, then no, they can't take your car. If you aren't working, they also can't garnish your wages as you don't have any.
However, I do have to wonder what you're living on? You obviously have an internet connection. You're eating. Who is paying your bills now?
You need to find a job and find some way of paying the debt.
You don't really need a lawyer. You need to call the collection agency back and tell them that you are not working right now and have no way of repaying the debt but you will start paying it as soon as you get a job.

First of all, they cannot garnish you paycheck or take any of your assets without a judgment from a court.
Second, it depends on what state you live in. In some states, your paycheck and your car is protected from garnishment.
Check your state's debtors' rights.

no they cannot take your car, unless they have the title or lien. and if your not working they can't garnish your wages. depending on your state you may consider bankruptcy you don't have to give up your car or home. and as soon as you do you will be bombarded with offers of pre-approved credit. as after the bankruptcy you will have no debt.

Yes they can take your car. To garnish your wages they must have first gone to court and got a judgment against you. Once this has happened, they can garnish wages, attach bank accounts and take property including vehicles.
