It comes from the Bible, from the book of Proverbs, ch. 15, verse 1, if I remember correctly.

It's good advice as anyone who works with people will tell you, whether teaching or in customer service. When dealing with surly people of any kind, if you keep your own demeanor calm and your own voice calm and normal (as opposed to raising your voice) then that will usually calm the person you are dealing with. When you get frustrated and raise your voice, that will only lead to an already frustrated or angry person becoming even more so, and more difficult to deal with.

The whole Proverb goes like this: A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirreth up strife.

It's 100% true. I have worked both as a teacher and in customer service.

Proverbs 15:1
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
When someone is being argumentative, and you reply with a soft spoken word. It will cease the argument.
However, if you reply with anger and frustration, you will be in the midst of an argument. Very true. One cannot argue alone. God bless****
Also from Proverbs 15:28
The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.
or
Proverbs 15:18
The hot tempered stir up dissension, but those who are patient calm a quarrel.
All are very true.

...and a hard answer stirs up anger." It means, be nice when someone is being mean or you'll only add fuel to the fire. It's based on a bible verse.

I believe Proverbs. It's means that if you think about what your going to say and say it in a polite way it will not cause someone to be angry.
