Larry,

To become a good fighter the first thing you must have is "Desire". You state that you "want to be a good fighter.." That isn't necessarily desire.

The next thing you have to have is the "Will". If you cannot commit yourself to extensive, exhaustive training, even when you don't feel like it, even when your body says no, then you will never become a good fighter.

You also have to have the "Instincts" of a good fighter. Training and pushing yourself to higher and higher levels of conditioning will help with your reactions, but instincts are something that cannot be taught. You either have them or you don't.

The fourth thing you must have is an experienced "Trainer". You say that you do not want to take any classes. Sorry, you'll never become a good fighter unless you learn how to fight from an experienced trainer, and through sparring and fighting with experienced fighters. You can't learn to fight unless you fight.

You can develop some very impressive knuckles if you do knuckle push ups on a hardwood floor, but what is the point if you are not going to learn how to use them?

There are no shortcuts to being a good fighter. If you don't train harder than your opponent, you'll never be a good fighter. Right now, your opponent is at a school somewhere learning how to fight. So, what are you going to do?

Simply put, no. You can not become a good fighter by getting in shape. Absolutely not.

I've been taking jiu jitsu classes recently, and no matter how strong you are, you can not win a battle with just strength. Technique vs. strength, technique always wins.

On the other hand, I've taken kenpo karate for about 3 years, and speed and power are the main componets to the style.

So, being in shape is a huge benefit to anyone, but muscles alone will NOT make you a good fighter.

Anyone with better conditioning, better technique and more confidence will ruin you. Anything that requires discipline and understanding takes focused effort, hardwork and a good coach to motivate you.

You may be a talented natural fighter and that may help. You can buy books and DVDs to help with technique as well. You don't want to create bad habits. It's good to tape yourself from time to time and evaluate your movements compared to those you are learning from.

It also won't hurt to find someone to spar with form time to time. Wear protective gear when you do and start off easy and move up in speed and power over time. Always be careful of heads shots, protect your melon.

Staying in shape will help to an extent but nothing beats good technique and understanding of conflict. You need some tools in your bag if you want to win a fight.

Doing push upswill give you strenght, to be a good fighter you need technique, conditioning and experience. Taking a martial art will give you technique, unless you become a stretfighter and learn the technique as you fight, by getting experience (this i DO NOT recommend, unless you like fighting), conditioning you will get by doing cardio, such as running, jumping rope, swimming, bike, or other sports. Experience you will get fighting.

There are other factors such as reflexes, toughness, muscle reflex, luck (yes, it plays a part), and natural ability that you have to consider, some people are good fighters even if they don't train.

being in shape is something that helps for sure, and pysical conditioning is NEVER a bad thing- we have too many fat people on this planet now anyway.

However, learning to USE what you have is a part of technique. it is better to be 170 lbs in shape than a 135lb skin and bones person, or a 170 lbs lard ***.

technique + stregth = power. you will learn to strike harder and fight better if you train.

You might be able to pick up something without a teacher, however odds are what little good you do pick up, you will pick up a ton more bad habits. Find a teacher who can correct your mistakes and teach you properly. A book can't correct you.

Doing pushups will make you better at pushups. If you want to be a good fighter the only thing you can do is train.

Keep up the exercises. Also you might try shadow boxing. Or practice fighting with a friend to get better. This will help with your instincts. It's like any other sport - you play like you practice.

All that makes a fighter "good" is being in shape, having quick reflexes, and understanding his own body and how to throw that weight effectively. I'm tired of people thinking martial artists are superhuman.

Just make sure you are strong, and flexible.... stay on your toes and you would be fine.
