I don't know about a degree of self-loathing.. because the term loathing is really extreme disgust. It seems to me that it is all or nothing. No degrees to speak of.
I therefore do not agree that it takes a degree of self-loathing to accept the concept of original sin.
It does take a large measure of humility to get headed in the direction of understanding personal sin to begin with.
I do not loathe myself and never had to in order to understand the concept of original sin.
I just had to be able to believe that there is indeed a Power that is beyond me, and have the desire to trust what God had to say about original sin.

I don't believe anyone inherits original sin.

What we do inherit is life in a fallen world. We suffer the effects of living with people who are broken and hurting. Adam and Eve were the only ones who started life in a perfect world, with perfect relationships with God and each other. We don't inherit their sin, but we do still suffer the consequences of it to some degree.

I think this is also the idea when God says that the sins of the father will be visited upon the third and fourth generation. God told Israel that would happen if they were disobedient. It's not that God hates those generations, but it was a warning that our actions can have long term consequences.

Think of the generational effects of alcoholism or child abuse and neglect. Behaviors are passed down, through no fault of future generations and they are left to deal with the damage and turn things around. They don't inherit the behavior, but they do suffer the effects of living with it.

I'm not sure how the doctrine of original sin is supported by those who believe it, but I think it leads to a lot of misunderstanding - especially of child development.

I think that may very well be. It seems to me that the concept of original sin totally underestimates the human being. And other ideas in Christianity as well seem to promote self-loathing. The idea that God is so holy that he can not even look at you unless your sin is "covered by the blood" is a very lowly concept of the human (and if you ask me, of God as well). It seems odd to me to say that God could not do any better than that in making human beings.

Not necessarily SELF loathing, but a loathing for all man kind. To believe that we are all born with a one way ticket to hell is just something only one who has lost who in the world can beleive.

I think so. I think if we actually did a study of those people who went through abusive or traumatic childhoods, we'd find the majority of christians fit that mold.
They are taught from a young age that they are bad, and christianity feeds into that with original sin.
Redemption by Jesus' "sacrifice" is a way to "atone" for being labeled a "bad child" without having to go through therapy.

Maybe I see it more as guilt than self loathing, I don't think that at least the god I believe in, thinks we are all bad untill clensed of our sins, not catholic here.

I think so. I think the concept of original sin is the saddest thing I have ever heard and I think it is terrible that it continues to be taught.

Peace!
