He is only 3 years old and on his last visit to the vet (8 months ago) he was fine.

are you sure they are imaginary? no gnats, or small bugs
my rottweiler does this from time to time
unless its constant i wouldnt worry

Yes it could be seizures and should be seen by the vet asap to rule out Epilepsy and distemper will cause this as well, but that is usually in younger dogs. Focal seizures have those symtoms, so don't waste too much time getting him there. I have had 2 epileptic dogs I fostered at the same time, and they were very difficult. One of my dogs turned epileptic at 4.5 yrs. old. You will need a lot of help and education on Epilepsy if that is the diagnosis. Let us know what you find out. Hope it's something as silly as a knat or a bug or something.

Perhaps he is snapping at gnats or flies or other small bugs you can't see. 3 years old is hardly time to call him an older dog though, I don't think you need to worry about seizures.

That is interesting. Another visit to the vet might be in order. Maybe he is seeing things that most others can't see, like nats or fleas.
