In addition to the Jesmond ones mentioned earlier that are quite handy for town but also have a few bars and restaurants nearby, i like a couple in Fenham on Brighton Grove.

Brighton Guest House - 0191 2733600 www.thebrighton.co.uk
Grove Hotel - 0191 273 8248

although less of a flashy area it is a short taxi ride in to town or 5 mins on bus.

There are some top notch indians nearby to the komal just around the corner on stanhope street is class and is bring your own booze too. There's a pub just across the town moor and if your going to the match you couldn't be better situated.

Depends on your budget.

Most expensive would be the Quayside gueshouses and hotels (on the river front). Then Jesmond would be a good bet - good area and cheaper than the Quayside but less central - on the train 10 minutes. There is a youth hostel in Jesmond too.

Or there is the west end - Brighton Grove area would be cheaper and can be reached on bus in 10 minutes - more ethnic area - good for Indian restaurants but not so many pubs. Small family run shops.

You could also ask the tourist office to arrange bed and breakfast - Jesmond area would be good for this.

There's a Premier Travel Inn by the Millenium Bridge - an excellent location and fairly good prices
