Most people spend more on insurance and registration in one year than they do on a bicycle.

I have been riding for over thirty years. In that time the only things I haven't been able to do with the bicycle are tow my sailing boat and transport my kids (when they were under eight months). I can get anywhere I need to on a bicycle. Sometimes I load it into other forms of transport to get me there a bit quicker.

Other benefits include

They are cheaper to run, you rarely need to search for a parking spot, You notice a lot more things happening as you ride around, It is a good way to meet other people, you develop a more relaxed outlook on life, If you ride during peak hour it is often quicker, You rarely need to pay to park it, You can take it inside for security, You don't get caught in traffic jams, it is enjoyable, You have to try really hard to get booked for speeding, As you get fitter you want to ride more, It is a great recreation, You get fit so you can enjoy a lot more of life's other pleasures.(even sex)

An employer notices, that you arrive bright and cheery. You don't need to stand around the coffee machine to get going. If you’re doing physical work you last longer. Your head is clearer so you are less distracted. (The time on the bike clears your head). Once other staff notice the benefits they start riding also. This gives the boss an impression of leadership skills.

Generally you’re in better mental and physical condition to take on anything.

The best bicycle for you will depend on what you want to do and where you want to go. Get to a few bike shops in your area and find the one that suits you.

But buy a car if you want. You could buy a lot nicer one with the money you save from cycling for a few years.

Dodge, will you use your bike for commuting? How far and how often?

Whatever style of bike you get, be sure it's properly fitted. The wrong sized bike will look dorky and be uncomfortable to ride besides.

Avoid department store bikes -- they are poorly assembled. If you do get a discount store bike, get the most basic model available -- "full suspension" on these bikes are for show and are entirely useless. Another drawback is that discount store bike-shaped-object will identify you as a dork to both motorists *and* bicyclists.

Used bikes are a good deal if you know what you're looking for. Otherwise, visit a local bike shop for pointers. If the shop workers sneer because you don't plan to use the bike for serious workouts or otherwise make you feel stupid, find a another bike shop.

Don't worry about the dork factor -- bike riding is the completely hip thing for the Hollywood crowd right now.

why should bicycles be dorky?
I like road bikes best.
And I always buy used ones, they are cheap.

If you want something between a bike and a car, investigate scooters. Depending where you live, check out what's the best model they let you drive with your car driving licence.

Man, it depends if you would want a road bike, a mountain bike or a comfort bike. If you prefer riding strictly on the pavements and really light bikes ----the road bike is ideal----Colnago, Felt,Kestrel,Giant have superb road rigs. Mountain bikes are for all-terrain and dirt roads----with front suspension or a dual suspension----you can test drive brands like Specialized, Intense, Trek,Kona, Haro, Iron Horse and many MORE! Choose rigs with quality components ( bombproof for better mileage!) and your size. Then for upgrades----check these websites ( www.pricepoint.com,wwwjensonusa.com,www.wheelworld.com).

Don't worry about what others think. With the money that you will save on a car, and all of the other car bills you will be able to save money to Buy a home when your friends are still renting.

Go for a {Giant Bowery} It's a single speed flip flop hub and its what all the messenger bikers use. I just built one up, where I work, and if there is any solid lower end bike that I would get it would be this one!

P.S. It is $500
