I think part of it is the fact that, while revered and respected, Buddha was not a god. However, it is taught that Buddha reached Nirvana and therefore would not be reincarnated again. Christianity teaches that Jesus will come again. Therefore, it's contradictory to declare yourself Buddha while it is possible that you could be Jesus.

Buddha was never declared to be an omnipotent being and he himself put in a component about his teachings that defies self-serving usage of the teachings... by examining the teachings yourself and understanding the logic, not taking his words on "faith" alone... so if it doesn't work then it's not Buddhism. Anybody who TRIES to use the Buddha or his teachings for self-serving purposes stick out like a glaring sore thumb.
