My son is 27 months now. His pediatrician is very particular and has been ever since he started teething about brushing in the morning and right before bed time. She says that we as parents should brush the kids teeth till they are 6 years old atleast. I have 4 brushes for him to choose from and 2 toothpastes. I let him choose what he wants and let him brush the way he does. Then pick the brush out from him and brush his teeth myself singing some song or the other which usually ends up to be "This is the way I brush my teeth!!" Now it has become pretty routine so he expects to brush his teeth. He had his rebellious phase for quite a while close to when he turned 24 months old...thought was the sign of the beginning of terrible twos that people warned us about :) All the best!

Yes, it is very important. My nephew had emergency surgery at 18 months to remove two badly decayed teeth that were infected. You wouldn't even have noticed it since the surfaces looked fine. The dentist told my sister to help him brush, even if he resists at first.
You might be able to get him to brush in the bath tub (without toothpaste, of course), but don't let him stand up with it in his mouth in case he falls. Try to find a mild tooth paste - Tom's of Maine makes milder flavors like apricot and it still has the xylitol in it which dentists recommend. Then make it a game. See if you can get it to foam and make funny faces in the mirror together and such. If worse comes to worse, you'll just have to do it for him like you would any other necessary health procedure.
Good luck!

She clamps her mouth close as quickly as I attempt to do it and as quickly as I supply her the comb she merely sucks on it. My pal informed me she had this comparable project together with her son so she switched to a baby's electic toothbrush, appeared to artwork. i'll Walmart immediately to attempt & discover one.
