I heard that it's dark chocolate that is especially bad for dogs. I know dogs that have gotten into the M&M's or hershey kisses and lived to tell about it. Small amounts seem to be ok... but not the best idea.

I read in here that it is bad for dogs. I have known people who feed their dogs chocolate once in awhile and in the past I have given some chocolate to dogs. I do not anymore though.

This is what I've heard:

I heard one day when I was over at my friends house that dog's will die if they eat chocolate. I don't think that it is true but, they do get very very sick once they get a bite of the chocolatey goodness. I feel so bad because chocolate is my favorite food. I would love to feed them chocolate, but, I do not want them to get incredibly sick!!! So... I hope that answers your question!!!

Chocolate which contains theobromine, and it that can be very dangerous to dogs in large quantities. Here are some calculations for levels of theobromine per oz.
Milk chocolate – 44mg per oz
Semisweet – 150mg per oz
Baker’s – 390mg per oz
The following are signs of these effects:
Hyper Irritability
Hyper Excitability
Diarrhea
Muscular tremors
Increased Urination
Restlessness
Vomiting
Induce vomiting within the first 1-2 hours but it may be best to get in contact with a vet and ask for advice on the situation.

Chocolate can be toxic to dogs if fed too much. The amount they can eat before it becomes toxic depends on their weight. I can't remember exactly how much it is. But is is safest to just keep chocolate away from your dog all together.

My dog ate a box of chocolates when we left her in the house around Christmas one year. She got real sick and left a mess for us to clean up, but thank god she didn't die. The vet said we were lucky and that it should have killed her. So, I would be careful with chocolate around dogs.
